Since this seems to be a pressing issue now, I threw together an example of what I was talking about with the text over the flower. [http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/5011/pikipedia2.png] My text abilities are really limited in Gimp, so I only had a few fonts and couldn't do the outline thing you had, but that's the basic idea.
