To answer your question about linking to NIWA members, you can see a list of wikis for which interwiki linking is set up [[special:interwiki|here]]. At the moment, you'll have to trawl through (or search in) that list; I'll get the some (NIWA, Wikia, Wikipedia) added to a help page somewhere. The convention I've used is the series name - for example, ''mario:'' for Super Mario Wiki. - Yeah, I'm from Bulbapedia, so I already new a lot about how substitution works, as well as a lot of other wiki things.
