Pikipedia is a wiki for information pertaining to the Pikmin series. Having only one consonant difference, its name resembles that of Wikipedia closely, while still retaining the first part of the word Pikmin. Being a wiki, everybody is free to edit pages and leave comments on talk pages, done by using the edit tab at the top of pages. Other ways to get involved and become part of the community include creating or participating in topics at the forum and chatting in the IRC chatroom.

Pikipedia currently has 1,873 articles. For other statistical information on the wiki, see Special:Statistics.

Goal

The goal of Pikipedia is to provide an extensive encyclopedia on everything related to Pikmin, for new players and veterans alike. Wherever possible, the information covers a wide range of accessibility, from the basic outlines of a subject, to the technical aspects of a game's inner workings. The content is aimed at users in all age ranges, all skill levels, and all types – players, editors, content creators, etc.

Given that Pikipedia is community-driven, pleasing the community is also a large part of the overall goals. While the content on the pages aims to be clear, direct, and professional, several backend features provide tools for community members to relax and interact amongst themselves.

History

Pikipedia was created on December 3rd 2005 by Dark Lord Revan at Wikia. On the third quarter of 2010, a major global website layout change was enforced onto all Wikia wikis; this change was not well received by most, and some wikis moved to independent domains, such as most of NIWA. Pikipedia followed suit, and became independent at pikminwiki.com on September 14th 2010. This move occurred through users of Pikcanon-NOT, the fanon wiki now known as Pikmin Fanon, who made an offer to Pikipedia to move to their new domain as well.

During the departure, the Pikmin Wikia became devoid of action and outdated, nevertheless remaining on the top of search results for Pikmin-related wikis, given Wikia's recognition value on the Internet. Soon after news of Pikmin 3, users who were eager to join a wiki and contribute went for the old website, without recognizing the existence of the official move to Pikipedia. Thus, two different communities established themselves, with the Wikia community focusing more on a typical social-media structure with unlockable achievement badges and opinion polls; they also tried to stay up to date on info, preferring quantity over quality, in comparison to this wiki. The independent site retained the classic wiki guidelines, which consider virtue as its own reward and encourage user-interaction outside wiki space, such as in the chatroom.

On July of 2014, users of Pikmin Wiki approached Pikipedia, in an attempt to discuss the future of both wikis. After exchanging ideas, both parties came to the conclusion that it would be in everybody's best interest if the information and community at Pikmin Wiki were to be moved and merged into Pikipedia, leaving Wikia behind once again.
