The squirdler family is a family of aquatic, squid-like creatures introduced in Pikmin 3, although the family went unclassified until Pikmin 3 Deluxe. It contains only one member, the Sputtlefish, which belongs to the Pseudocephalopoda genus.

SputtlefishEdit

Main article: Sputtlefish.

Scientific name: Pseudocephalopoda florascens

The Sputtlefish is an aquatic enemy that debuted in Pikmin 3. They are small, aquatic creatures that vaguely resemble real-world cephalopods, grabbing Pikmin with their tentacles and eating them one at a time. Sputtlefish can squirt ink to defend themselves against attackers such as Pikmin, causing them to run around in panic, and take advantage of the ensuing chaos by fleeing and regaining health.

NamingEdit

The name "squirdler" contains "squird", which maybe a mix of "squid" and "squirt". Members resemble squids and are known to squirt ink at enemies.

The family genus, Pseudocephalopoda uses "Pseudo-", meaning it greatly resembles or is even confused for something it isn't, and Cephalopoda, a real world class that includes squid, octopuses, and cuttlefish. The only member of this family resembles these marine creatures.
