Careening Dirigibug

Flotillium circusmaximus

Careening Dirigibugs are extremely strange creatures, seemingly alien to Olimar even on the Pikmin planet. They float like Swooping and Bumbling Snitchbugs but are Dirigibugs rather than Scarpanids. They have balloon-like attachments that allow them to fly or hover around. When approached, their defence mechanism involves bomb-rocks, which they apparently produce from inside their body and throw to the ground, detonating a few seconds later. They are defeated in the same way as Scarpanids: just throw Pikmin and take them down, watching out for the explosions in the process.

These beasts are only found underground, which includes caves, Challenge Mode and a single 2-Player stage, Hostile Territory.

Olimar's Notes

This creature floats effortlessly through the air using gas-filled balloons. Both its appearance and its nature are antagonistic. And it is the only variant of its species in the ecosystem. It may be best to consider the possibility that it somehow wandered into the ecosystem from an entirely alien one. Positive proof does not exist at this point, but that is how the creature is currently classified.

Louie's Notes

Pull off the balloon-like air sacs, mince the meaty abdomen, and shape it into small cakes. Pan-sear the cakes until crusted, but be careful not to overcook the delicate meat. When ready to serve, garnish the plate with the vibrant air sacs. Even the most disconcerting dinner guest will be dazzled by the colorful presentation!

Fighting strategies

Approach from behind and throw Pikmin, preferably yellow, aiming at the balloons. If they hit the body, it can easily shake them off. Ultra-bitter spray is recommended. If it throws a bomb, then wait until it's about to go off, then down the bug, and the bomb will hurt it. This can be tricky, as well as risky. An alternative strategy is to force the Careening Dirgibug to throw a bomb at a captain. Immediatley after is goes off, rush in with your Pikmin. The beast will either not have a new bomb, or it will relinquish it. If it lands near your Pikmin, back off and try again.
