Red Bulborbs are the most famous enemy in Pikmin and Pikmin 2, and often symbolize the game. They were originally known as Spotty Bulborbs in Pikmin 1 however Olimar's discovery of other spotty species of different colors made him change the name. They are nocturnal creatures, thus they sleep for most of the day.

Most have a very slow reaction time when attacked. If attacked by a large enough force, they can be overcome before they can counterattack. It is also true that throwing numerous Purple Pikmin will work exceedingly well in defeating it without fail. Their mouth is large enough to fit several pikmin in it, so attack from the behind for best results. Red bulborbs are very apathetic. If one is attacked, the other ones won't even wake up at all, not even a signal is given out. These enemies were originally called Spotty Bulborbs, but when other kinds of Bulborbs started showing up, they had to be renamed as Red Bulborbs. These enemies can be still be defeated by your captains, as long as you're careful. The Rocket Fist may aid you in this greatly.

Olimar's Notes

This large organism has the familiar mandibles and cranial morphology of the grub-dog family, as well as the characteristic bulging eyes. As with most grub- dog, the creature's cranium comprises half of its total length and girth. Showing a scarlet abdomen with white spots, this creature is primarily nocturnal, choosing the prey upon smaller creatures returning to their nests. Originally classified as the Spotty Bulborb, further research has reclassified this species as the Red Bulborb. Subspecies of varied color have recently been discovered, but academics are divided into two rival camps over how to handle their classification.

Louie's Notes

Plump specimens are best spit-roasted whole, stuffed with a lime and a slab of bacon. Baste frequently to ensure a magnificently moist haunch.

How to Kill

Several Pikmin attacking a mature Red Bulborb.

Pikmin

Swarm it with a large group of Pikmin, preferrably reds, and it'll die. If you have a smaller group with you, repeatedly throw Pikmin onto the Bulborb's back and retreat if it starts charging at you. When it goes back to sleep, toss more Pikmin on its back. Note that a glitch exists when the Bulborb moves in to attack that renders it invincible. Unless it's at very low health, expect some Pikmin to be devoured. With a large enough Pikmin group this shouldn't be a problem, though. If you wish to use bomb-rocks against it, the Bulborb will die with two blasts.

Pikmin 2

Much easier to kill here than in Pikmin 1. Continously toss Pikmin onto its back and continue tossing if it shakes them off. A few purple Pikmin can cause serious damage, especially if they stun the Bulborb.
