The '''Pikmin series''' currently consists of two games, [[Pikmin (game)|Pikmin]] and [[Pikmin 2]] (and their counterparts in the [[New Play Control!]] range on the [[Nintendo Wii]]), with a [[Pikmin 3|third]] to be released this year. Both games have been scored well by critics, the sequel generally higher than Pikmin. There have been a number of rumours in the past concerning a Pikmin 3 being in production for the [[Wii U]], and on July 15, 2008 at a private conference, Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that Pikmin 3 was in production. During E3 2012, [[Pikmin 3]] was officially announced for the Wii U. The total number of sales for the series is approximately 3.78 million [http://vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?name=pikmin]. It has now been announced that Pikmin 3 is in production, and previews have been released. At E3 2012, Pikmin 3 was discussed and could be tried out; a [[Challenge Mode (Pikmin 3)|challenge mode]] in which the new leader is to collect fruit with red and the new [[rock Pikmin|Rock Pikmin]], and the other mode being a boss battle against the [[Armored Mawdad]]. The new game in the series will be released August 4th in the US, July 26th in Europe, July 13th in Japan, and Australia's release date is to be announced.
