Rock Pikmin are a new species of Pikmin featured in Pikmin 3. They are slow and simply appear to be rocks with pikmin's eyes, limbs, and violet flowers, just like the Pink Pikmin. However the "rock" is most likely a hard outer shell. The 'skin' on the arms and legs of Rock Pikmin appears black.

Abilities

Rock Pikmin have rock-hard bodies; they are capable of smashing and chipping away glass and crystaline barriers with ease.

They appear to be able to carry the same normal capacity as any other Pikmin. Despite their strength, they have a setback; Rock Pikmin cannot latch onto their targets. Instead, they will repeatedly attack enemies by charging headlong into them.[1]

It can be assumed that they are somewhat similar to the Purple Pikmin, at least in terms of girth and size. The Captains have no issue throwing the Rock Pikmin. This could lead to the assumption that Rock Pikmin are mostly hollow and are therefore not as heavy as they would look. Due to their unique properties, it could be assumed they would be very useful, if not vital, in certain combat situations.

Obtaining Rock Pikmin

So far, the only known way to obtain rock Pikmin is to have a Medusal Slurker suck up normal Pikmin into its body, which will turn them into Rock Pikmin. Then, you must defeat the Slurker to get the Pikmin back. Being rock-like in nature, it is unlikely there will be a rock Candypop Bud.

Trivia

Rock Pikmin may be reference of to the sailing stones or "moving rocks" of Racetrack Playa, Death Valley.
