Effects
At any point in the saved game selection screen, the player can press switch to change a file's difficulty, but doing so prevents the player from earning any badge related to completing Story Mode in a given difficulty, in that file. If the player uses this option to change to the exact same difficulty the file is already at, nothing will happen.
Normal
Normal mode is the easiest difficulty. In it, days last 18 minutes. The mid-day chime plays after 9:00 minutes, the sunset warning begins after 15:50 minutes, and the sunset countdown begins after 17:27 minutes. Enemies usually have lower health than on the Wii U original.

Hard
Differences
Hard mode is the intermediate difficulty. In it, days last 13 minutes, which is the same as in the original Wii U version. The mid-day chime plays after 6:30 minutes, the sunset warning begins after 10:50 minutes, and the sunset countdown begins after 12:27 minutes. Most enemies have twice as much as health than on normal difficulty.
The following is a list of known differences between difficulty modes. The Wii U version of Pikmin 3, which is most similar to Pikmin 3 Deluxes Hard difficulty, is included for comparison's sake.

Ultra-Spicy
In other game modes
Ultra-Spicy mode is the hardest difficulty. In it, days are shorter than 13 minutes, and enemies are stronger. Most notably, the 100 Pikmin limit of Pikmin on the field is reduced to a 60 Pikmin limit. Fruits also provide half the amount of juice that they normally would.

Internally, other game modes use rules based off of specific difficulty modes. Each stage is capable of specifying what difficulty mode it uses.

Badges
There are three badges the player can gain from completing Story Mode on any given difficulty, without changing it at any point.
* Pikmin Challenger: Obtained by beating Story Mode on Normal, Hard, or Ultra-Spicy difficulty.
* Pikmin Professional: Obtained by beating Story Mode on Hard or Ultra-Spicy difficulty.
* Pikmin Master: Obtained by beating Story Mode on Ultra-Spicy difficulty.
