Category talk:Captain Olimar images

Hey! Pikmin screenshot hoard

i noticed that, like, seemingly every single hey pikmin screenshot on the wiki is in this category just because olimar is in frame? i understand some of them being here, but when he's very clearly not the focus in most of these (and looks identical in most) it kind of makes this category impossible to navigate through, since a majority of it is Just those screenshots. i made a gallery excluding these as a user subpage (i wanted to sort them by game anyways), but i figured i'd also mention it here because it kind of seems like a genuine issue. This is related to the more general topic of whether categories for images of a particular subject should include images that contain the subject, or images that focus on the subject. There isn't an ideal answer to this, as both approaches have advantages and disadvantages for organization. It's also possible to take an approach somewhere in between, but there are many ways that this could be done. The wiki has some guidelines on this, but they could be interpreted in different ways. I don't know whether it would be practical to have more specific guidelines, or what those guidelines could be given the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches. — Soprano_(talk) 08:16, August 21, 2026 (UTC)

yeah, i could see how it could be difficult to really have a concrete answer on that. i agree some sort of inbetween approach would be ideal, as i do think it's nice to have in-game screenshots in the category, generally. i guess the part where i start thinking it "excessive" is when most of them don't have anything new to offer visually, i'd suppose? A lot of the screenshots are just like, Olimar standing there and then there's some treasure or creature that's also in frame - and since it's a 2d game, "olimar standing there" is kind of visually indistinct.

that said, i'm also unsure how that should be done policy-wise because it feels like that could be pretty subjective, and some people might think that they'd have to comb through every image to make sure it's "distinct" enough to be in a category. Probably a reason why i specifically mentioned subject focus, but that too could be confusing. i'd personally say that promotional material and such have more leeway in both of these respects compared to in-game screenshots, since they're usually more unique even if not every subject is getting equal attention.

i think generally it's more of an issue with repetition in this case because the images aren't sorted within that category, so every image of the character is just kind of all in one mass. --LoveDoctor (talk) 22:31, August 21, 2026 (UTC)
