This page aims to compile the specific conditions for every wild Pikmin, Candypop Bud, Egg and Honeywisp to spawn in the caves of Pikmin 4.
Although the layouts, treasures and enemies in Pikmin 4's caves are not randomized in the same way that they are in Pikmin 2, one element that does change in them is the wild Pikmin and Candypop Buds. Many of these appear only in specific situations, such as the player bringing less or more than specific amounts of the corresponding Pikmin type, or the squad being too full. After we realized that a lot of the conditions and specifics about this mechanic were actually somewhat inconsistent and unpredictable enough across the game's various caves that it would be impossible to find a general rule that applies everywhere, we decided to test them all and compile all of this information.
Before the breakdown of each individual sublevel, here are a few important notes :
• Eggs & Honeywisps : In addition to wild Pikmin and Candypop Buds, this document also
keeps track of all eggs and Honeywisps in caves. Although many of them are simply fixed
spawns that appear no matter what, we decided to track them for two main reasons :
- They are frequently used to replace wild Pikmin or Candypop Buds in cases where those do not appear, meaning that a sizeable amount of them are conditional and not fixed
- We discovered in the midst of testing wild Pikmin and Candypop Buds that many of the eggs and Honeywisps in the game are interchangeable, i.e. it is random whether an egg or a Honeywisp will appear in a specific spot under specific conditions. This is not the case for every egg or every Honeywisp, and so we have also made tests to figure out which locations has interchangeable eggs or Honeywisps, which will be pointed out below alongside the wild Pikmin and Candypop Bud information (if a location is marked as "Egg or Honeywisp", then it has a random chance to have either). Please note that these may not be exhaustive as due to them relying on random chance, it is possible we missed a few simply due to very bad RNG. Also, as a sidenote, this odd quirk seems to be the only actual random factor in Pikmin 4's caves, to the point that it is the only thing that might change if a sublevel is reloaded with the Rewind Time function.
• Jellies and Pots : Wild Pikmin that are inside pots and Hydro Jellies follow a different logic
from regular wild Pikmin : rather than being generated along with the sublevel, they are not
actually generated until the pot/jelly is destroyed. This means, for instance, that if the player
enters the cave with 100 Pikmin but loses 5 before destroying the pot/jelly, it will still
contain the wild Pikmin, since there is room for them at the moment the pot/jelly is
destroyed. Also, unlike the other wild Pikmin groups, which only ever appear in groups of 5,
these can appear in smaller numbers if the player has between 96 and 99 Pikmin, for
instance 3 will appear if the player has 97 Pikmin. If a pot/jelly that can contain wild Pikmin is broken when the player has over 95 Pikmin, then it will also release a drop of nectar in addition to the 0-4 wild Pikmin. Another important note about
pots and Hydro Jellies is that any element that can be contained in them (such as wild
Pikmin, but also Candypop Buds, and the one rare instance of buried wild Pikmin sitting
under a Hydro Jelly) will never appear again after the pots/jellies are destroyed, even if the
cave is re-entered. For example, a Candypop Bud encased in a Hydro Jelly may or may not
appear when the jelly is destroyed based on its spawn conditions determined by the squad's
composition, but once that jelly has been destroyed, neither it nor the Candypop Bud will
ever appear again on this save file (unless progress is not saved of course), regardless of
squad composition.
• Hard Mode : With the update to Pikmin 4 adding a difficulty level that reduces the
maximum size of the squad to 60, it naturally follows suit that all thresholds are changed in
this gamemode. While these have not been tested exhaustively, and could be the subject of
further study, some superficial tests have revealed that the following rules seem to apply :
- Thresholds that are directly deduced from the max squad size (i.e. thresholds of 85, 90 or 95 related to wild Pikmin no longer having room to appear) are still the same distance away from the max squad size (they become thresholds of 45, 50 or 55)
- All other thresholds (most commonly thresholds of 50 and 5, but all of the other occasional instances of other numbers being used too) are simply multiplied by a factor of 0.6, rounded down (becoming, for instance, 30 or 3)
• Pikmin type limit : Due to the game being designed so that you can never have over 6
Pikmin types with you at once (Glow Pikmin excluded), Candypop Buds that spawn in but
are of a type that would allow to get a 7th type based on your squad and the other Candypop
Buds in the area will change type to prevent that from happening. Specifically, the
Candypop Bud will turn into an Ice Candypop Bud, unless Ice Pikmin is one of the two
types the player is missing, in which case it will turn into a White Candypop Bud. If Ice and
White are the two missing types, then it will become a Purple Candypop Bud instead. This
phenomenon presumably applies everywhere, but the only cave in which it can actually be
observed is Cavern for a King. The phenomenon will not be taken into account in this
breakdown of Candypop Bud spawn conditions, but do remember to take it into account
especially for the Cavern for a King data.
Past this point lies a breakdown of every individual sublevel in the game. Each location where a wild Pikmin, Candypop Bud, Egg or Honeywisp can possibly spawn will be described, along with a breakdown of which of these can
possibly spawn at this location and under what condition they appear. In the case of
eggs and Honeywisps, if no condition is given, then it means that this egg/Honeywisp appears no
matter what. Pikmin inside pots/jellies also never have conditions other than the pot/jelly being
present and the player having room for them when it is broken. Also, please note that all Pikmin
tresholds listed are based on the composition of the player's squad when the sublevel is generated,
not when the cave itself is entered. The only exception to this is the Pikmin inside Hydro Jelly and
pots, who are generated when the recipient is broken, and not when the sublevel is generated, as
stated above.
