The creature is called "Lesser" because it is the smallest of the two known Jellyfloats, the other being the [[Greater Spotted Jellyfloat]]. In Japan, it is called {{j|コマンマン|Ko Manman}}, where {{j|コ|Ko}} means "Young", but {{j|マンマン|Manman}} is unknown. Its scientific name is ''Cephalus dottalium'', where ''dottalium'' is similar to the English word "dotted", referring to its spots.
