(Greatly expanded the gameplay effects section to describe petal expenditure.)
(Removed the Types section as it was outdated and mostly duplicated content in the Nectar article. Added an Obtaining Petals section instead.)

Petals are items used for flower planting in pb. To get petals, the player must feed nectar to Pikmin in the garden, which will make a flower bloom on their head. Petals from that flower can then be picked and added to the player's inventory. There are multiple types of petals, each with a different appearance on the in-game map.

Petals can mainly be obtained by feeding Pikmin nectar. Each of the several nectar types corresponds to a petal type. Feeding nectar to a Pikmin will (in most cases) make a flower bloom on their head, and tapping that flower will add 1 or 2 petals to the player's petal storage. Each Pikmin can only be fed nectar 6 times before it will be overfed and lose its flower after it has been tapped. Some types of petals can also be obtained from the shop, without having to purchase nectar first. There is a limit to the number of petals of each type the player can hold; this is 200 by default, but can be increased through in-app purchases in the shop.
There are several groups of petals based around types of flowers, all with white, yellow, red, and blue colors, the order of which pertains to the relative rarity of their nectars, with white being commonplace, and blue being very rare.

Regular petals are obtained through normal white nectar, in turn obtained through normal fruits. All nectars instantaneously bloom a flower when fed to Pikmin, with the exception of white nectar, which will instead first grow a bud then after a second nectar will become a flower.

The next petal type, pansies, are obtained through pansy nectar, in turn obtained from shiny fruits given by pansy flowers and from challenges. Unlike regular nectar, all pansy nectars will instantaneously bloom a flower, even white ones, and provide both pansy and regular petals when collected.

After pansies come roses, which follow the same rules as pansies; their nectar will immediately provide a flower to be collected.

Apart from these types, there are also others which have special criteria to obtain. Tulip petals used to be obtainable from the shop, but since 30, they are no longer obtainable. Poinsettia petals are only obtainable on the second Community Day, held on 18.
