The New Play Control! (Wii de Asobu in Japan and previously called Let's Play On Wii) range of video games is a collection of GameCube titles ported to the Nintendo Wii, with their controls altered for play on the newer console. During a Nintendo press conference in October 2008, the games were announced, along with the details that the range will include the two Pikmin games.[1] The re-release of Pikmin in Japan was 25th December 2008, and release dates for North America and Europe are the 11th March and 6th February 2009[2] respectively. Pikmin 2 was released in the UK on 24th April 2009.

Changes

Changes that have been made to Pikmin 1. Some of these will presumably be carried over to its sequel.

  • The game now has widescreen support.
  • A new control scheme allows control of the cursor by pointing at the screen with the Wii controller. Because of that, the player can now call the Pikmin at a greater distance.
  • An updated save system allows the player to restart play from any previous day.
  • Some sound effects are played by the Wii remote speaker.
  • Enemy sound effects, 'voices' in particular, are different, notably more 'squeaky'.
  • Only the "tails" of Pikmin spirits are blue, rather than being completely blue as they are in the GameCube version.
  • Yellow Pikmin holding bomb-rocks no longer drop them when whistled to. In addition, they will automatically try to run out of range of a planted bomb-rock's explosion.
  • There is a new Enemy Reel style.
