The development of ''Pikmin 2'' started after {{p1}} was finished, and was originally supposed to take two years, though it ended up taking two-and-a-half. Director Shigefumi Hino wanted to include various things that couldn't be done in the first game, such as 2-player gameplay. The biggest change compared to the first game was removing the [[day]] limit, which removed a large source of tension from the game. In response, [[cave]]s were added, with the fact that Pikmin cannot be grown in them adding a new source of tension. Two new Pikmin types were added to give players more freedom in how to approach challenges, and real-world objects were chosen to be the main collectible items to give a sense of scale to the world.{{cite web|https://web.archive.org/web/20040708070251/http://www.nintendo.co.jp/nom/0405/1_2/index.html|''Pikmin 2'' development staff interview (in Japanese)|Nintendo Online Magazine|published=May 2004}}{{cite web|https://www.ign.com/articles/2004/08/25/pikmin-2-interview|Pikmin 2 Interview|IGN|published={{date|25|August|2004}}|retrieved={{date|22|May|2023}}}} | |||
