Careening Dirigibugs are extremely strange creatures which don't appear to be native to the region in which they're seen. Colorful balloon-like appendages allow them to drift gracefully around the arena. Don't let their comical appearance fool you though: when approached, Dirigibugs pull from their mouths live bomb-rocks and toss them onto the ground with the intent of blowing you and your Pikmin off the map! If you're quick on your feet, you can use this behavior to damage nearby enemies. Dirigibugs can be defeated in the same manner as Scarpanids and other flying enemies: rapidly throw Pikmin onto it while in the air (one Purple Pikmin will work just as well), then swarm it when it falls.

These beasts are only found underground, which includes caves, Challenge Mode and a single 2-Player stage, Hostile Territory.

Fighting strategies

Approach from behind and throw Pikmin, preferably yellow, aiming at the balloons. If they hit the body, it can easily shake them off. Ultra-bitter spray is recommended. If it throws a bomb, then wait until it's about to go off, then down the bug, and the bomb will hurt it. This can be tricky, as well as risky. An alternative strategy is to force the Careening Dirgibug to throw a bomb at a captain. Immediately after it goes off, rush in with your Pikmin. The beast will either not have produced a new bomb in time, or it will relinquish it. If it lands near your Pikmin, back off and try again.

Trivia

A Careening Dirigibug trophy can be unlocked in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Interestingly, when reading the trophy discription, it says that Careening Dirigibug's occasionally throw dud bombs. This never happens in Pikmin 2, so many people are speculating that this could be a hint for Pikmin 3.
