In Pikmin, bomb-rock Yellow Pikmin that touch the pit will cause the bomb-rock to explode instantly, but with some peculiar behavior – the explosion happens roughly on the right spot, but at ground level, and is invisible and silent. This explosion can harm leaders and Pikmin. An easy way to see this in action is by going to the corridors with fire geysers on The Forest Navel, having a group of Pikmin, and throwing a bomb-rock Pikmin down into the pit, as close to the ledge as possible. There is a chance that an invisible explosion will kill the Pikmin on the corridor.

In Pikmin 4, Winged Pikmin can't be thrown into pits as they will fly back up to safety. However they can still die to pits if they get knocked into one. Glow Pikmin cannot die from falling into an abyss, as they will only fall a short distance before teleporting to the active leader. When Pikmin go out of bounds and fall into a pit they're not supposed to fall into, they will teleport above the active leader. When playing on the Relaxed creature Activity Level, Pikmin will always teleport above the active leader upon falling, so pits are effectively harmless.
