“「ピクミン」というゲームを初めて触ったとき、自分の目の色が変わっていくのをたしかに感じました。それでこの本を作るにあたり、僕は親切丁寧に説明するよりも、とりあえずいろんな人に「ピクミン」をプレイしてもらうべきだと考えました。とにかくこのゲームの伝えづらさといったらなくて、はなから僕は語るための言葉を捜そうともしていなかったように思います。それはまったく僕が誇るべきことではないのかもしれませんが、いろんな人に声をかけてプレイしてもらうと、コントローラーを握った人たちは思ったとおりつぎつぎに目の色を変えていきました。自分の目の前で人が明らかに目の色を変えていく。そういうことってあまりあることじゃないと思います。「ピクミン」って、そういうゲームです。いろんな人が、高まったり、怖がったり、愛しく思ったりしながら、目の色を変えていくようなゲームです。本の随所に、いろんな人が変えたいろんな目の色を並べてみました。慌ただしくではありますが、ゲームの案内や開発者のみなさんの声なども詰め込んであります。あなたがもし『ピクミン』をすでにプレイしているなら、ほかの人が変えた目の色に共感して愉快な気持ちになることと思います。もしもまだプレイしていないなら、ここにあるさまざまな目の色が『ピクミン』というゲームをほかの何よりもあなたにうまく伝えられるのかもしれません。”

“The first time I played "Pikmin", I definitely felt my eyes changing color. So when it came to making this book, I decided that rather than explaining things gently and thoroughly, I should just get a variety of people to consider playing "Pikmin" first. Honestly, this legendary game is incredibly hard to describe. I don't think I even tried to find the words to explain it from the start. It might not be something I should be proud of, but when I asked different people to play it, those who picked up the controller changed their eye colors one after another, just as I'd expected. Seeing someone's eye color change right before my eyes. That's not something you get to experience very often. That's what "Pikmin" is like. It's a game that makes all kinds of people change their eyes as they become excited, scared, or filled with affection. Throughout this book, I've gathered all the various different eye colors people showed. It's a bit rushed, but I've packed in a game guide and comments from the developers. If you've already played Pikmin, seeing the eye colors others showed might make you smile with delight. If you haven't played yet, perhaps these diverse eye colors here will convey "Pikmin" to you better than anything else.”

“宮本茂『ピクミン』を語る

まずはこの不思議なゲームを生み出した宮本茂さんにお話をうかがいましょう。『ピクミン」がどうやって生まれてきたのか、「ピクミン」に何が詰められているのか、「ピクミン」ってなんなのか。手がかりがここにあるのかもしれません。

開発の経緯

――ゲームキューブで最初に何を作ろうかというときに、おそらく山のように企画があがったと思うんですけど、その中で「ピクミン」が選ばれた経緯を聞かせてください。

宮本茂(以下宮本) そうですね。最初僕はプロデューサーとしてやっていて、途中から全面的に関わるようになったんです。まず最初にこのゲームのディレクターが、何かAIを使ったようなものをやりたいと言っていて。それは、何か生き物がいて、その生き物がいる生態系全体を眺めているのが楽しい、というものだったんです。それでまあ、とりあえず実験的にという感じで作り始めた。ちなみにそのときの生き物は、ピクミンとはぜんぜん違う姿だったんですけどね。”

Development Details

――When deciding what to make first for the GameCube, I imagine a mountain of proposals came up. Could you tell us how Pikmin was chosen from among them?

Shigeru Miyamoto (Miyamoto): Right. At first, I was involved as a producer, but midway through I became fully involved. The game director initially said he wanted to do something using AI. It was about some kind of creature, and finding joy in observing the entire ecosystem where that creature lived. So then, we started developing experiments. Incidentally, the creature at that time looked completely different from Pikmin.”

The reason they can be near Spotty Bulborbs, who prey even on the juveniles of their own species, is because it has red and white spots on its abdomen (this is because Spotty Bulborbs determine whether an adult is the same species based solely on the presence or absence of red and white spots on the abdomen).

“The majority of the mandiblard family lack wings, but in this species, only the adult males have wings. Meanwhile, the females spend their entire lives underground, pupating near the surface but never emerging as adults, instead, they lay eggs inside the pupa. Since it flies through the air, it's quite difficult to attack it with Pikmin. However, if you can throw some Pikmin at it, the Pikmin's weight will cause it to fall, so aim for it.

“It holds its roots until they reach a certain size, then detaches them once the spore-bearing surface is full. They then roam around spreading their spores over a wide area. It is edible, and it is rumored that it is quite delicious. Also, it seems some regions call it Kinoko Bonchi instead of Puffstool.

“This Pikmin was infected by Puffstool spores, it's not a different species of Pikmin. Its body has turned purple, and instead of a flower, a mushroom grows on its head. Its thought processes have also been corrupted by the spores, so it fails to recognize Olimar and relentlessly attacks him. While some Pikmin infected by the spores manage to regain their senses, most Pikmin perish.
