This expression is used when a correctly transcript sentence or word is incorrectly written. This means that when somebody sees the incorrect word, they might think that the page editor made a mistake when writing it, and fixes it. However, this is not the case, because in the text's original appearance, it already had the mistake, and as such mustn't be corrected.
