#01-1 The Mysterious Planet PNF-404

“Due to a certain shipwrecking incident, an unknown planet has been discovered for the first time in a few centuries. This blue planet, blessed with an abundance of water, is said to have a diverse ecosystem and bears traces of civilization... We will start by presenting the reports on this mysterious planet in full detail.

TOPIC 1
Discovery of an Unknown Planet

This planet was discovered when Captain Olimar, a veteran freight courier captain for Hocotate Freight, was suddenly hit by a meteorite while on vacation. He was located after crash-landing, as though drawn down by a mysterious force. The very same planet was then discovered by an unmanned probe from Koppai. Named PNF-404, this probe was sent to investigate the planet's food resources.

A Coincidence, Or...

Strangely, after Olimar's ship crashed, the team sent to rescue him, as well as the team searching for food (Captain Charlie and two others), all crashed just as they were preparing to land on the planet... There are still many unknowns regarding the relation between these incidents and the planet, and I would like to compile them into a report at some point in the future.

TOPIC 2
Planet Environment

70% of the planet's surface is covered in water, most of which is salt water. The tilt of the planet's axis relative to its orbital plane causes winds to circulate the atmosphere, leading to a temperate climate which enables us to observe the seasons in mid-latitude regions. It is believed that the formation of the planet's diverse ecosystem occurred due to the generation of tides caused by the single large moon that orbits it.

TOPIC 3
Traces of Civilization

There are a great number of buildings and unnatural objects on this planet which are thought to be the legacy of past civilizations. We will introduce a few of these structures here.

Ancient Arches

A massive structure with a wooden roof supported by metal pillars. In ancient times, perhaps lively markets and other events were held beneath this roof?

Rugged Scaffold

Its imposing white appearance is thought to have served as a symbol of the people's faith, and many mysterious implements which may have been used in the rituals of those days remain in the area.

Stargazer's Spot

We have observed traces of an advanced civilization, such as the ruins of a castle, within this structure. This may have been the final refuge of the royalty of this once flourishing planet.

Unknown Creatures As Well...?

Traces of civilization in diverse natural environments. We now understand that this planet is filled with more mysteries than we could have ever imagined. In our next report, we will introduce the mysterious creatures first encountered by Olimar.

#02-1 Mysterious Creatures Known As Pikmin Part One

“In our previous report, we discussed the planet PNF-404, but in this report we will cover the mysterious creatures encountered by Captain Olimar.

TOPIC 1
What Are Pikmin?

Compared to other creature on this planet, the Pikmin are highly intelligent and very friendly. Although they are unable to understand language, it seems it is possible to give them instructions by throwing them or blowing whistles. They are also highly social and often act in groups, likely due to the difficulty they would face in surviving on this harsh planet individually.

Their bodies are slightly smaller than our own, but the most noticeable difference lies in the plant-like protrusion growing from the top of their heads.

Half Animal, Half Plant

Animal
Able to walk on two legs, it is in their nature to pick up dropped objects.

Plant
Pikmin are born from seeds that sprout in the ground. When the leaves on their heads grow, they soon sprout into buds and flowers.

It seems that the majority of Pikmin are unable to adapt to water. According to experts, Pikmin have evolved from the roots of plants, and much like land-based root vegetables, they are unable to breathe through their skin in water and will drown.

COLUMN
They look just like carrots!

Pikmin received their name due to their strong resemblance to the Pikpik Carrots found on Hocotate. The luxurious Golden Pikpik Carrot is a much prized vegetable desired by those on Hocotate.

Coexisting with the Leaders

What is symbiosis?

Symbiosis is when different creatures interact with each other while living in the same space.

When Pikmin sprouts are pulled from the ground, they will recognize their leader and follow along. From this moment on, a type of symbiotic relationship is born between the leader and the Pikmin.

With lots of Pikmin to command, they can carry heavy objects and defeat the creatures standing in their way.

Pikmin Advantages

With a capable leader at the forefront, Pikmin can increase in numbers at a rapid pace, becoming the most powerful creatures on the planet.

#02-2 Mysterious Creatures Known As Pikmin Part Two

“In our previous report, we discussed the planet PNF-404, but in this report we will cover the mysterious creatures encountered by Captain Olimar.

TOPIC 3
Wild Pikmin The Crew Saw Them! Wild Pikmin

Some of the Pikmin that fail to form symbiotic relationships and decrease in number,or are separated from their group, seem to turn feral and migrate underground.

While there may have been some wild Pikmin varieties that have since gone extinct, there is also an exceedingly rare variety that can only be produced by throwing a Pikmin into a flower known as the Candypop Bud.

Reports of strange varieties...

Eyewitness reports attest to sightings such as these.

It seems there may also be varieties that can no longer be considered Pikmin anymore...

Not only do Pikmin increase in number through symbiosis with their leader, but it seems as though they even gain the ability to reproduce through symbiosis. The Onion can be thought of as both their nest and their incubator. Upon providing the Onion with nourishment, it will send out seeds to increase their numbers. However, while the Onion itself is a closely related species, it is in fact a completely different creature... Next time, we will provide a report on the Onion.

#03-1 Mysterious Object: Onion Part One

“At a glance, the mysterious object known as an Onion looks much like a vegetable. The following report is based on information gathered by crew members who have encountered this object first-hand.

TOPIC 1
Statement From the First Discoverer

According to Olimar, the first to discover this object, it was found buried nearby after shipwrecking on this planet. It stood up on its legs and sent out a single seed, as if awaiting his arrival. This seed then sprouted into a Pikmin. He named this strange object "Onion" due to its resemblance to the onions of his home planet, Hocotate.

TOPIC 2
Nest? Or Transport Vehicle?

As a Nest for Pikmin

The seedlike things known as pellets, as well as defeated creatures, are used as nutrients for the nest of the Pikmin, which will then send out seeds of the same color as the onion itself. It plays the role of increasing the number of Pikmin by greedily absorbing an assortment of things.

Notes

If the number of Pikmin present on the ground exceeds a certain number, they will start to multiply within the Onion. It seems that limiting the number of active Pikmin serves the purpose of preventing their full destruction should things take a turn for the worst.

As a Vehicle

Furthermore, it seems that the Onion is also used as a means of transport for the Pikmin. At night, when nocturnal predators are active, the Pikmin are loaded up and taken into the upper atmosphere for safety. Apparently they also followed Olimar's ship.

Relationship Between Onion and Pikmin

Thanks to the Onions, Pikmin are able to steadily increase their numbers and avoid the threats lurking in the night. The Onions facilitate their own growth by having the Pikmin bring all sorts of objects to it. This could be described as another type of symbiotic relationship.

An Abundance of Varieties?

Colorful Onions can be found on the planet, with each color acting as a nest for that variety of Pikmin.

In addition to differences in color, the Onions also appear to vary in shape and properties. Just as how actual onions come in various types, Onions may develop differences depending on the location and environment in which they grow.

Friends of Pikmin?

These creatures have muscle fibers characteristic of half-animal, half-plant creatures, and they seem to be related to Pikmin in some way...

It is in the Pikmin's nature to carry objects that increase their numbers to the Onion, while taking everything else to the leader's spaceship. They may be trying to strengthen their symbiotic relationship with us by instinctively picking up on what it is that we need... Next up, we will report on treasure. These are crucial samples for our investigations on this planet, yet they bear no particular significance to the Pikmin themselves.

#04-1 Uncovering the Mysteries of Treasure

“The treasures found all over this planet each bear a certain charm that bewilders and captivates all that lay eyes on them. Even though it's my first time seeing these, somehow they feel familiar... I wonder why? This time we'll be taking a closer look at the mysteries of treasure.

TOPIC 1
What are Treasures?

These objects, which contain Sparklium, are invaluable samples for leaning more about this planet. Various types of treasure have been identified, including relics of ancient civilizations, giant fruits and vegetables, and strange processed foods.

So many collectors

These are extremely rare and highly coveted by collectors of treasure across the universe. Many voices have called for management and preservation to prevent illegal mining and outrageously priced sales.

Flavorful
A high-quality food source

These fruit contain a large amount of Piktamin U, and are both highly nutritious as well as delicious. If we are able to bring back these seeds and grow them, they could become a new source of food.

Brimming With Energy
Also useable as a power source for spaceships.

The shine that radiates from the surface of this object indicates the Sparklium contained inside. When several objects of the same kind are brought together, their vibrations resonate, creating even more energy.

One point of attraction toward these treasures is to ponder the purpose that these objects once held for the people of this planet, and what uses they may present us with now. It seems possible that either of them could be correct or incorrect, but which is it...?!

#05-1 Man and His Space Dog

“Space Dogs are said to be the oldest and most faithful companion animal. When and where did this deep bond and trust across species arise? We hope to unravel the mysteries that surround both our familiar Space Dogs, as well as those newly discovered on other planets.

What are Space Dogs?

Body
They have a higher body temperature than that of Rescue Corps. officers, and the color and length of fur differs by breed.

Mouth
Pants heavily to regulate body temperature. They have a strong bite and carry things in their mouths.

Nose
Their sense of smell is one hundred million times powerful than that of Rescue Corps. officers, and it can distinguish between all kinds of smells.

Legs
They walk on two legs with their well-developed paws, and the pads of their paws act as slip prevention and cushioning.

Handy-Dandy Space Dog

As well as being highly intelligent, they also have a keen sense of smell and strong athletic abilities. For these reasons they are often active in rescue operations and medical care.

Note

I had heard that Space Dogs are capable of functioning in harsh environments, but somehow Rescue Pup Oatchi exceeds expectations and is adapting to the atmosphere of unknown planet PNF-404 without a hitch.

#06-1 Spaceships on Duty

“There are currently a range of spaceships navigating the universe. These include transporters for carrying supplies and traveling between planets, passenger ships for the enjoyment of space travel, and space probes for investigating unknown planets. This time we will be shining the spotlight on the spaceships and small probes that have reached planet PNF-404.

TOPIC 1
The History of Spaceships

Interstellar Travel Made Possible

With the development of warp navigation, interaction between planets flourishes. It was thought that everything in the universe had already been discovered due to the efforts of this adventure ship.

Hocotate Ship

Although it is now in a state of disrepair, it was once an adventurous spacecraft that participated in grand adventures across the universe, piloted by Chacho and his wife. Able to separate from the main ship and fly, the Research Pod at the top of the craft is also equipped with AI for navigation and analysis, which are indispensable for adventure.

Discovery of an Unknown Planet

An unknown planet was discovered for the first time in centuries, all because of Captain Olimar's shipwreck incident.

S.S. Dolphin

The cockpit fits one person, while the interior is equipped with a cabin for a family of four. Olimar also uses this ship as a transport vehicle for his work in shipping supplies. The nicks and scratches on the hull are badged of honor, representing the many challenges they've overcome together. Unfortunately, the impact from the crash has caused the AI to malfunction.

Multi-Part Crash-Landing

According to Olimar's SOS signal and Voyage Logs, the majority of people who visit this planet end up shipwrecked.

S.S. Shepherd

A large rescue ship built by remodeling a passenger ship. Divided into a cargo hold and living quarters, and boasting enough space to house fifty evacuees while jammed full with supplies. While it is a hybrid vehicle that utilizes a combination of fuel and Sparklium, a high-octane fuel is used to ensure a stress-free flight.

Due to a population increase caused by a fifth baby boom, the planet Koppai is facing a serious food shortage.

S.S. Drake

Deployed with three crew members to this planet (the planet this time was renamed PNF-404) in order to survey for sources of food. Due to its sturdy hull, the ship did not sustain any damage in the crash. Unfortunately certain weak points caused the crew to be ejected and the cosmic-drive key was easily dislodged.

#06-2 Spaceships on Duty

“There are currently a range of spaceships navigating the universe. These include transporters for carrying supplies and traveling between planets, passenger ships for the enjoyment of space travel, and space probes for investigating unknown planets. This time we will be shining the spotlight on the spaceships and small probes that have reached planet PNF-404.

TOPIC 2
Pint-Sized Research Pods

There are also small-scale research pods which are used for different purposes than the full-sized spaceships. We will introduce some of them in this section.

Research Pod

The end of the Hocotate Ship, this pod can be separated from the ship and used to explore caves. The AI installed on this unit is an older model – emotional, rowdy, and on the temperamental side.

SPERO

An unmanned probe dispatched by planet Koppai to search for sources of food. With the future of the planet hanging in the balance, a great many of these probes were sent out. The unit that discovered planet PNF-404 was number 713.

S.S. Beagle

A small-scale research pod that carries people and objects, and was designed for exploration of the planet. However, the engine does not have enough power to escape the planet's gravitational pull.

TOPIC 3
Crop Circles?

Many crop and stone circles have been sighted in the vicinity of the landing sites of both spaceships and smaller research pods.

Case 1
Three huge flower designs forming a triangle. The number of petals on these designs differ from the number of petals on the Onions that land on them.

Case 2
The position and designs of the circles may vary even when visiting the same areas. Maybe the space-time continuum of this planet is warped...?

Case 3
A crop circle discovered by Koppaites. The multiple circles depict what seems to be the orbital trajectory of stars from a star system somewhere.

Case 4
These relics are lined with mysterious stones that change color on approach. Two sizes of circle are drawn when above ground, while only one smaller circle is depicted when underground.

Who created these circles, often used by our ships as landing guides and as the bases of our operations, and for what purpose? When considering who benefits the most from the landing of our spaceships, it may bring us close to the truth... In our next report, we will introduce the caves found on planet PNF-404, explorable using our small and nimble research pods.

“There are cave systems that extend far below the surface of this planet. Mystical treasure, diverse ecosystems, and mysterious experiences yet to be uncovered lurk in their depths. In this report, we will be taking a deeper look at these cave systems.

Upon returning to the planet surface after exploring the caves, it was discovered that less time had passed than expected.

Olimar's thoughts
The dilation of time can be observed when traveling at speeds of light or while in the vicinity of a massive gravitational field. Perhaps the entrance leading to the cave is some kind of wormhole, which then connects to a different pocket of space-time...?

Changes with each visit

Despite entering the same cave, it seems that the layout inside may change.

TOPIC 2
Unique Ecosystem

Unique ecosystems are formed inside the caves, which have environments different to those of the surface world.

Wollyhop

These creatures have adapted to the cave environment, and give off the air of a performing mime. They can jump with quiet refinement, never moving their plump jowls at all. It's graceful and expressive in the most unexpected ways.

Waterwraith

All that is known about this creature stems from a few sightings deep underground. It has been suggested that it may actually be some type of psychic phenomenon – a type of hallucination brought on by the fear experienced by those who claim to have seen it.

Unlike the Waterwraith, this mysterious life-form can take on many different forms. Apparently Olimar was once captured by this Plasm Wraith.

#07-2 The Planet's Subterranean Areas

“There are cave systems that extend far below the surface of this planet. Mystical treasure, diverse ecosystems, and mysterious experiences yet to be uncovered lurk in their depths. In this report, we will be taking a deeper look at these cave systems.

TOPIC 3
Various Environments

Picturesque natural scenery and numerous ancient ruins can be observed within the caves.

Sightless Passage

If there are two entrances above ground, the location of the exit will change depending on which one was used as the entrance. They look like they're in the same locations, but there are slight differences due to the phase of space-time.

Plunder Palace

Did the ones that lived here need to move underground so badly that they even had to create an artificial sun...? The food left on the table along with the light of the setting sun feels quite melancholic.

Industrial Maze

This ancient machinery is still functioning, yet there is no sign of a power source. When this mystery is solved, we may be able to resolve the energy issues plaguing the cosmos...

The pattern drawn on the ground is thought to be a suspicious magic circle. It could be that secret rituals were being performed down here in the dark, away from prying eyes...

Seafloor Resort

If you look closely at the outer-side of the transparent walls, there seem to be murals that depict living creatures, as well as a vast and empty space beyond. We think it may have been a facility for looking out at the creatures on the other side while floating in the pool.

Many people have been found lost in the caves. Perhaps there is something lurking in the depths, luring them in... In our next report, we will take a look at the space suits and equipment that make exploring harsh environments, like the caves, possible.

“Although most are now quite comfortable with space exploration, it is undoubtedly still fraught with danger. Planet PNF-404 is no exception to this, and most people would not be able to survive without life-support systems in place. In this report, we'll be taking a look at the space suits and equipment that make our activities in these harsh environments possible.

1. Light
Lights up in the color of the spacesuit being worn and illuminates the surrounding area. During emergency situations it flashes to indicate the wearer's location.

Crew members can communicate with each other via radio transmission. Emits an SOS signal in emergency situations.

3. Life-Support System
Maintains a consistent flow of air inside the spacesuit. Forced-sleep mode is activated if a threat to the wearer's life is detected.

4. Gloves
Supports firm grip strength and can even be worn while operating tablets.

5. Boots
Features superior durability and airtightness, and can be worn comfortably in the vacuum of space or underwater, and in both low and high gravity environments.

What is Forced-Sleep Mode?

This feature enables long-term life-support by putting the wearer into an artificial forced-sleep, and also transmits an SOS signal to aid in rescue. The glass of the helmet fogs up due to the freezing gas filling the space suit, and the smart fabric function is deactivated to reduce power consumption.

What is Rescue Gear?

“Although most are now quite comfortable with space exploration, it is undoubtedly still fraught with danger. Planet PNF-404 is no exception to this, and most people would not be able to survive without life-support systems in place. In this report, we'll be taking a look at the space suits and equipment that make our activities in these harsh environments possible.

Design

Spacesuits are essential for protecting the body, but their designs are unique and rather fashionable. We've taken this opportunity to have Puddle, a universal stylist, talk us through the designs of our spacesuits.

• These suits are older models that were impacted by cost-cutting. The red and blue lights on the right-side of the chest give it a retro feel.

  • Apparently the battery for the life-support system only lasts for thirty days. That doesn't feel very reassuring for planet exploration.
• A fancy executive suit. The two big buttons on the chest make for a nice touch.

  • This suit was designed with a bib attached for the peace of mind of those who can't stop drooling at the mere sight of treasure. But it kind of removes any sense of a decent outfit, eh.
• This is the latest model from Star Bazaar. The color coordination between the gloves and the life-support system is spot-on.

  • The fabric is light and super strong, so you can rest easy if someone tosses you over a ledge! It's a pity that the insulate properties had to be cut, though.
• This one is from the other famous brand, right? Although they've been losing market share recently, I like that they use stretchy fabric for the joints and really focus on the finer details.
• Focal Point
  • According to the charter for the Interstellar Federation, the colors for the Rescue Corps' spacesuits must be the same on the top and bottom. It's pretty bland from a fashion perspective, but it's to distinguish them from regular folk during rescue operations.)

As you now know, our familiar spacesuits are designed with a whole host of functions and features included. That said, the life-support systems of the older models were only designed to last for thirty days, yet somehow Louie was able to survive on the planet's surface for much longer... I wonder how? We may not understand the reason, but he must be a pretty sturdy guy. In the next report, we'll be introducing the castaways who were only able to survive thanks to these wonderful spacesuits.

TOPIC 4
Commonalities

We have found a number of commonalities between not just those that we have introduced so far, but also between all the civilizations that live amongst the stars, including myself.

Commonality #1
Height

There is very little hight difference between the people of the planets belonging to the Interstellar Federation. Only the relics on PNF-404 are unusually gigantic, but we have yet to find the intelligent lifeforms that built them.

Commonality #2
Legends

There are many myths and legends confirming that our distant ancestors came from another planet, not just planet Giya. It's said that the planet was dense with nature and surrounded by water...

For some reason, many of the people who have shipwrecked on this planet report being overcome with a feeling of nostalgia. Even I myself cannot help but feel a sense of homesickness for everything I see on this planet. Perhaps the secret to our origins is hidden away there... In the next episode, the Interstellar Federation's investigative report on this planet will come to a close, but I will try to summarize my thoughts on the mysteries of the planet in my own way.

The ships that approach planet PNF-404 happen to crash-land due to unexpected system failures. Yet it seems that some do manage to avoid this fate. I have put together a summary of the arrival status of each of the ships introduced in report #06 Spaceships on Duty.

A Deserted Place

In Conclusion

The ruins and treasure on this planet are rather similar to the ones we know, although much larger in size. We even feel a sense of familiarity towards them. According to the Shepherd Family History, which was authored by successive generations of Rescue Corps captains, the ancestors of those on planet Giya originally came from a beautiful blue planet. If that very planet was in fact PNF-404, then it's possible that we have finally returned home after a long journey through space and time.

In Conclusion

Unlike the space-time continuum that we're familiar with, it's speculated that the planetary phase is shifted into a different time period each time someone crash-lands on the planet. With these changes, it's almost as it the planet itself has a will of its own.

Closing Thoughts

Here I would like to propose my own theory as to the causes of the shipwrecks on this planet, based on all that has been discussed in this, and the previous, repots.

The Pikmin Theory

The Pikmin are never far from those that shipwreck on the planet. They are friendly and reliable partners, willing to sacrifice themselves to help us achieve our goals. But is that not a little too convinent? Now, if the Pikmin are searching for a superior being to serve as their leader for the sake of their own prosperity, then it would make far more sense to think of us as the ones that are being used.

The Amphibio Theory

According to Olimar, he had a dream while inside the Plasm Wraith in which giant creatures, who looked similar to us, were living together with Pikmin and many other creatures.

Additionally, minerals from the meteorite impact were detected in the stone rollers wielded by the Waterwraiths, so it is possible that they were involved in the crash-landing of the S.S. Dolphin. Perhaps they dream of living amongst these giant creatures once again, and that is why they are trying to crash out spaceships?

The Planet Itself Theory

According to a certain theory, planets themselves meet the definition of a living being. Could it be the planet itself that is calling out to us with some purpose in mind? It could then be conceivable that everything we experience on this planet is being manipulated to further that very purpose.
