The Bug-Eyed Crawmad is called such because of its protruding eyes – creatures like this are often called "bug-eyed". In UK English, the word "bug-eyed" is "bugeyed", so the European and Oceanic releases of the game call the creature "Bugeyed Crawmad". In Japan, it is called {{j|デメジャコ|Deme Jako}}, where {{j|デメ|deme}} means "bug-eyed", and {{j|ジャコ|jako}} is very similar to {{j|シャコ|shako}}, or "{{w|mantis shrimp}}". Internally, this creature is called <code>demejako</code>, which is a Romanization of its Japanese name.
Its scientific name is ''Camabarus subterranid''. ''Subterranid'' is a play on "subterranean", referring to its ability to hide underground.
