These bulbous plant-hives have brightly colored bodies with a black and white band across the midsection. On the top, there is a big flower, closely resembling the flowers that Pikmin have. In ''Pikmin'', Onions look different before they are discovered. They are darker and less saturated in coloration, have no flower on top, and are partly buried. When Captain Olimar approaches them, they suddenly fill with color, their flower blooms and spins rapidly, and they pull their legs out from the ground and out of their folded position. Additionally, no matter if they are dormant or not, the Onions' pattern bands are slightly smaller and lower down on their main bodies than ''Pikmin 2''{{'s}} Onions.
