The '''Spotty Bulbear''' ({{j|クマチャッピー|Kuma Chappī|Bear Chappy}}) is a powerful [[enemy]] that appears in every mainline game in the {{ps}}.

While they resemble [[Bulborb]]s at a glance, Spotty Bulbears lack their pointed snouts and generally have a rounder face, with large, chapped lips. They have black, red-dotted backs, and their faces are creamy yellow or orange. The Bulbears' larger mouths allow them to gobble [[Pikmin family|Pikmin]] up in greater number and speed than most other Bulborb species, making them rather formidable adversaries.

While they spend most of their time sleeping until disturbed in {{p1}}, they are constantly awake in all other games, and will freely patrol the entire area in search of prey. Spotty Bulbears are often accompanied by their [[Dwarf Bulbear]] offspring, who follow their 'parent' on their patrols in search of food.

== Behavior ==
In {{p1}}, Spotty Bulbears largely spend their time sleeping, only waking up if disturbed by the Pikmin or [[Olimar]]. They have slightly more health than their Spotty Bulborb counterparts, making confrontation riskier. The red spots on their back constantly change in size, even after the creature's death. They have a noticeable [[Health#Regeneration|regeneration]] factor, healing if the player takes too much time to kill them, but otherwise behave almost identically to their Bulborb counterparts.

In {{p2}}, Spotty Bulbears never sleep, spending all of their time patrolling in search of prey. Contrary to what [[Olimar's notes]] suggest, they do not have a predefined 'patrol path'; they simply wander to random, nearby map [[Carry#Paths|nodes]] while patrolling, often followed by multiple Dwarf Bulbears. They are one of the most mobile enemies in the entire game: In any sublevel or area where a Spotty Bulbear is active, extreme caution must be taken until it is neutralized, as it's random patrol path allows it to potentially attack Pikmin anywhere, including while idling at the base.

Spotty Bulbears in ''Pikmin 2'' do not truly die when defeated, instead falling unconscious. When lying unconscious, its health will steadily regenerate as it attempts to [[Health#Revival|revive]] itself. If the body is not destroyed, such as by collecting it or defeating it while it is [[ultra-bitter spray|petrified]], it will eventually wake back up, and will need to be defeated again.

In {{p3}}, Spotty Bulbears largely behave the same. They have a notable resistance to [[bomb rock]]s, and are generally less persistent, stomping their foot in anger and disengaging a chase if they cannot reach their intended target, compared to the previous game, where they would try forever. Their eyes are a weak point, and hitting them with a Pikmin will cause it to briefly panic and stop whatever it was doing to fling its attackers off, even if it was in the middle of eating Pikmin.

In {{p4}}, they can be found both above and below ground, featuring most prominently in the [[Giant's Hearth]], where three patrol the central part of the area. They also appear in some harder [[night expeditions]]. They mostly behave identically to how they do in {{p3}}, although hitting their eyes no longer stuns them, and they now have predetermined patrol paths. While they still sleeplessly wander during the day, they now follow predictable routes through smaller areas, rather than being able to roam anywhere as in ''Pikmin 2'' and ''Pikmin 3'', making it much easier to bypass or outright ambush one.

Spotty Bulbears are always awake in this game and are constantly roaming the map, making a surprise attack nearly impossible. It is possible to trick the Bulbear into attacking and missing, allowing the [[leader]] access to its backside, but they frequently have [[Dwarf Bulbear]]s following them, making this tactic risky. Another means of accessing its rear is to split the [[leader]]s, using the one without Pikmin as a distraction. If [[Purple Pikmin]] are available, they make the battle easier as they can injure and stun the adult and children, but with other types it may be wise to use an [[ultra-bitter spray]]. It is often effective to switch roles with and hunt the Bulbear itself before it can pick up any Dwarves, and then stun and attack it.

If fighting multiple at the same time, such as in the [[Subterranean Lair]], attempt to include as many as possible in the radius of an ultra-bitter spray dose to simplify the battle and prevent heavy losses.

In situations where time is not a concern, but one wishes to keep the Pikmin out of harm's way, it is possible to punch it and it's offspring to death, although it will be a risky and somewhat lengthy process even with the [[Rocket Fist]].

Spotty Bulbears will pursue nearby leaders and Pikmin upon detecting them and will pay no mind to anything in their path, such as walls or bottomless pits. As such, it is entirely possible to trick it into walking off the sublevel and into the [[abyss]], which will defeat it. If the Bulbear is holding a treasure, like on the third sublevel of the [[Dream Den]], the treasure will safely appear nearby after a moment. The Bulbear itself will not reappear, so it will not revive if this is done.

Spotty Bulbears have a number of weaknesses in ''Pikmin 3'':
* When a Bulbear snatches Pikmin, it stops to fling them into the air and land them down its throat. Then, it pauses for about two seconds. If it has eaten a large amount of Pikmin recently, it may burp. This small sliver of time should be enough for a wary player to escape or attempt an attack.
* They will instantly die if they ingest a bomb rock.
* Bulbears emit a heavy, snarly breathing noise when giving chase, which can be heard from a distance, alerting players of their presence. When in a dark area, their glowing purple eyes can also be seen from a distance.
* If a Bulbear spots the player, it will give a glance at the group, making it much easier to tell if the Bulbear can see its prey or not.
* They can be briefly stunned if their eyes are attacked, like other large grub-dogs in ''Pikmin 3''. 

In the sole encounter in the game's main story, bomb rocks are provided; to avoid a costly battle, simply use them to defeat the Bulbear quickly. It will take 3 non-ingested bomb rock explosions to defeat the enemy.

If attacking head-on, they are fought quite similarly to other grub-dogs; your best course of action is usually keeping it in a cycle of flinching by throwing Pikmin at its eyes repeatedly to ensure it cannot attack. [[Rock Pikmin]] and [[Red Pikmin]] are the most effective for this strategy.

Spotty Bulbears following set paths in this game makes them more predictable. Wait for a safe time to attack before attacking the creature. [[Rush]]ing at the Bulbear with Oatchi will deal a lot of damage quickly, but do not do this from the front of the enemy as it will be able to quickly eat Pikmin as they fly towards it from Oatchi's back. Doing this from the back of the enemy is safer, but still risky. If there are Dwarf Bulbears nearby, they may also be able to eat Pikmin. *Exclusively in {{p1}}, their pupil color is dependent on on an invisible point, which there are two of in [[The Distant Spring]], above the areas nearby both the [[UV Lamp]] and closest [[bomb-rock]] pile to the landing site. Their pupils take on their natural purple color (or dark blue for [[Dwarf Bulbear]]s) when facing one of these points, with them appearing as a bright, glowing, pinkish red when facing away, or even a gradient between the two at certain angles.
**In [[The Forest of Hope]]'s [[Challenge Mode (Pikmin)|Challenge Mode]] version, this invisible point is instead always above [[Captain Olimar]], and used to cast a light around his immediate surroundings.
