Ecology is the study of interactions between organisms and the environments they live in. The ecology of the Pikmin franchise is known mainly through the notes the different characters give on the subject.

Same-species Interactions

A section about how species interact with other members of their species.

Bulborbs

Bulborbs have likely the most information about how individuals interact with eachother, as they are the most iconic enemy in the franchise.

Adult bulborbs often prey upon their juveniles, which is why young bulborbs hide in caves during the day and come out at night when the adults are asleep.

Bulborbs will occasionally form packs. This is best seen in the Twilight River, where a pack of three Orange Bulborbs can be seen gaurding a Portable Sunset.

In bulborb packs, certain factors, such as the amount of prey available, can cause female bulborbs to become Empress Bulblaxes. The Empress Bulblax acts as a sort of pack leader. The Empress will also mate with several males, acting like a sort of Queen Bee within the pack.

Any male bulborbs not involved in mating will undergo sex changes, marking the bulborbs as a sequentially hermaphroditic species.

Sheargrubs

Sheargrubs live underground in groups. Males are ambush predators, emerging from the ground upon sensing potential prey, while females will feed on “juice” left behind by dead Pikmin.

Peckish Aristocrab

Peckish Aristocrabs seem to be somewhat social animals. Individuals will click their pincers together to try to impress others. The individual with the largest claw will be favored by other aristocrabs. Although not explicitly stated, Peckish Aristocrabs likely share similar mating habits with real-world fiddler crabs.
