The '''Withering Blowhog''' ({{j|アオケダタラ|Aokedatara|Aoke Bellows}}) is an [[enemy]] in {{p2}} and {{p4}}. Withering Blowhogs are a smaller variation of the [[Puffy Blowhog]]. They are {{w|balloon}}-shaped creatures that have orange-red skin with yellow spots that seem to form a flame design and a white underside. They also seem to have four whisker-like appendages under their snouts that are white in color. When [[Pikmin family|Pikmin]] are nearby, they unleash gusts of air (or orange gas in ''Pikmin 4''), which will cause the Pikmin's flowers to instantly [[Maturity|wilt]]. In ''Pikmin 4'', they can also wilt [[sprout]]s, and can rapidly escape after shaking off Pikmin by blowing a burst of gas, flying off, and reappearing a short distance away.

In [[2-Player Battle]], the Withering Blowhog is one of the selections on the roulette. When chosen, these creatures appear near the opponent's [[Onion]] and act the same as they do in the main story mode.

== Behavior ==
Like their [[Puffy Blowhog]] cousins, Withering Blowhogs attack by using nasal blasts to shove Pikmin around. However, their nasal blast will also [[Maturity|wilt]] any Pikmin hit by it, dramatically slowing them down; this makes them rather annoying enemies that, in most cases, should be prioritized to minimize potential frustration, especially if [[nectar]] is not readily available to re-flower the Pikmin. [[Purple Pikmin]] are heavy enough that they won't be shoved around by the air, although they'll still lose their flowers. If the Blowhog is able to wilt any Pikmin, it will briefly stop and chuckle.

In {{p2}}, if a Withering Blowhog happens to spawn behind a [[bramble gate]] that needs to be broken or a thin wall in caverns, be aware that it can &ndash; and will &ndash; attack the Pikmin through it, wilting all of them. In the event one is guarding a gate, this will complicate matters significantly, as, apart from wilting them, each blast will knock them away from the gate, stalling progress. Either be prepared to locate nectar to re-flower the Pikmin after, or, alternatively, reset the game to regenerate the sublevel for a better layout.

In {{p4}}, they will additionally target Pikmin sprouts that have flowers or buds, attacking and wilting them as well, most noticeably in sublevels with buried [[wild Pikmin]]. They also behave slightly differently: they will largely ignore the player if their entire Pikmin [[squad]] consists of nothing but leaf Pikmin, or if the player has no Pikmin with them, whereas in {{p2}}, they will attempt to attack anyways. Additionally, if the player's squad is currently affected by [[Ultra-Spicy Spray]], the Blowhog will actively retreat from them, waiting until it wears off to attack. If attacked for an excessively long period of time, they will retreat by blasting directly below them, shooting into the sky while wilting everything nearby, and relocating somewhere nearby after a few moments.

When defeated, they will panic and empty their air bladder to escape, although the air in this animation is cosmetic and cannot wilt Pikmin. In {{p2}}, they will despawn entirely after this, dropping anything they might have been holding, while in {{p4}}, their flattened corpse will land after a short delay, allowing the Pikmin to carry it.

Throw Pikmin (preferably [[Purple Pikmin]]) at it, taking care to avoid the nasal blast, as the loss of flower Pikmin can be frustrating. Purple Pikmin cannot be knocked around by its air blasts, making them ideal candidates for fighting one, although they will still be wilted if hit.

If it does successfully wilt any Pikmin, it will stop and giggle. Use this opportunity to counterattack.

In {{p4}}, if the player's squad is currently under the effect of [[Ultra-Spicy Spray]], the Withering Blowhog will attempt to keep its distance from them for the duration, actively retreating if approached. Attacking it during this period will make for an extremely swift battle with no chance of retaliation.

===Alternate methods===
Despite appearances, a [[leader]] ''can'' hurt a Withering Blowhog exclusively in {{p2}}; the third hit from the [[Rocket Fist]] combo can hit if performed directly underneath it, although it would take a very long time to kill it exclusively with punches.

In {{p4}}, if [[Oatchi]]'s [[Oatchi#Big Chomp|Big Chomp]] skill has been learned, enabling him to bite in midair, he becomes an ideal candidate for attacking one, as the Withering Blowhog obviously cannot wilt him, although note that it may shove him around with air blasts unless the [[Gear#Brace Boots|Brace Boots]] have been purchased.
