Burrowing Snagrets appear to be a combination of a bird and a snake, and they are members of the [[snavian family]]. Their bodies are covered in blue scales that protect them from attack, encouraging directing attacks to their feathered heads. In {{p1}}, the Burrowing Snagret's body can be attacked for small damage, while in all later titles its body is entirely invulnerable. The Burrowing Snagret has low health for a boss, but it often appears in groups. In {{p4}}, fledgling versions called [[Downy Snagret]]s can be found.

== Behavior ==

When idle, the Burrowing Snagret will stay hidden underground; only emerging once [[Pikmin family|Pikmin]] or a [[leader]] enters its territory. Once Pikmin or a leader enter its territory, it will emerge from the ground and will begin to attack. In {{p1}} and {{p2}}, Snagrets usually emerge from the ground extremely quickly, although they infrequently get stuck in the ground. This significantly stalls their accents, which leaves their heads wide open to Pikmin attacks, especially to [[swarm]]ing in ''Pikmin''. In {{p3}} and {{p4}}, they will always struggle to unburrow themselves. It does this by first emerging and then shaking its head, before fully appearing. If the leader and/or Pikmin leave its territory, it will burrow itself back into the ground until its territory is once again approached. If the leader or Pikmin are in its territory, but far away enough that it cannot attack, it will stay above ground and keep watch.

The Burrowing Snagret's main method of attack is to quickly peck nearby Pikmin and grab them. It will attack any Pikmin its beak can reach, giving the creature a deceptively large range of attack. Once Pikmin are caught in its beak, it will swallow them soon after. However, Snagrets prefer to grab other currently reachable Pikmin before doing so, allowing it to only swallow after multiple consecutive pecks. In the first two games, the Snagret is able to grab 3 Pikmin in its beak before having to swallow. In ''Pikmin 3'', the Snagret will be able to grab 5 Pikmin before swallowing. In ''Pikmin 4'', the Snagret will attack 2-3 Pikmin before it stops to swallow; although it will peck at the ground 4-5 times. Whilst it gets attacked in {{p1}} and {{p2}}, it rocks its head back and forth. In ''Pikmin'', the amount of rocks it does depends on how many Pikmin are attacking it. In ''Pikmin 2'', it will always be four rocks in a row, followed by an attack if any Pikmin are in range.  In ''Pikmin 3'' and ''Pikmin 4'', it gains an additional attack. This attack has the Snagret stab its beak into the ground to attack the leader. If the leader is caught, the Snagret will swallow them, damage them slightly, and then regurgitate them; although if it misses, it will slam its beak into the ground, leaving itself immobile for a few seconds. If enough Pikmin are attacking its head, it will shake off all attackers before quickly burrowing itself back into the ground. In ''Pikmin'', if a Snagret has Pikmin in its beak and is receiving heavy damage, it will sometimes re-burrow itself without swallowing, killing the ensnared Pikmin in the process. In ''Pikmin 3'' and ''Pikmin 4'', once a Burrowing Snagret receives enough damage, it begins to lose the feathers off of its head, until it becomes wholly featherless.

In ''Pikmin'', Burrowing Snagrets can be harmed by [[bomb rock]]s. They can also be damaged by eating bomb rocks being held by [[Yellow Pikmin]], in the same as it eats any other Pikmin; although bomb rock explosions deal minuscule damage. In ''Pikmin 3'' and ''Pikmin 4'', they are only capable of eating one bomb rock at a time, which takes out a third of its health. Additionally, they only grab the bomb rock, leaving whoever was holding it unscathed. Once the bomb rock is eaten, its stomach expands due to the explosion before it quickly burrows itself back into the ground. This is also the case for [[mine]]s and [[trackonator]]s.

The Burrowing Snagret has had a different death animation in each game. In ''Pikmin'', it will scream into the sky before falling onto the floor in the direction it was facing. Its body will then lightly, and harmlessly, explode. It leaves a trail of dust and feathers, starting from its head and leading to the end of its exposed torso. In its place, there will be a randomly colored five-pellet where its head was, and seven randomly colored one-pellets where its torso once was. However, the last one-pellet, created by the explosion of the last exposed section of the Snagret's body, will instead be the [[Geiger Counter]]. This is the case for the Snagret holding the [[ship part]] in [[The Forest of Hope]]. In ''Pikmin 2'', the Snagret goes limp the same way as it does in ''Pikmin'', however the explosion is more violent (though still ultimately harmless) and is limited to its torso. The explosion now starts at the bottom of its torso and ends at the head. The explosion's force causes the Snagret's head to briefly go airborne, before crashing back down to the ground as a collectable corpse. While exploding, the Snagret's scales, and in the case of its top body segment - a mess of feathers, fly out of the exploding creature before quickly disappearing. In addition, the scream it does in ''Pikmin 2'' echoes far more compared to its scream in ''Pikmin'', making it appear louder. In ''Pikmin 3'', the Snagret will jump out of the ground and scream, revealing a single avian leg, before falling to the floor; leaving its whole body behind as a corpse, which Pikmin drag by the head. The same behavior happens in ''Pikmin 4'', except its body now coils up after it jumps out of the ground instead of lying straight, allowing the Pikmin to more easily carry it.

In ''Pikmin'', they are extremely hard to beat without losing Pikmin if [[throw]]n at the head, as they have very high [[health]] and are quite large. Its striking speed will also allow it to eat some Pikmin and burrow back into the ground before any significant damage is done. When trying to defeat it in the first game, the best strategy is to throw Red Pikmin at its head while it's emerging from the ground as fast as you can, then whistling in your Pikmin right before it shakes them off to prevent them being eaten. *In the ''Super Smash Bros. series'', the Burrowing Snagret trophies contain a few [[mistake]]s.
**The ''[[Super Smash Bros. Brawl|Brawl]]'' trophy states that no one has ever seen a Burrowing Snagret's tail before. However, Olimar states in the Piklopedia that the Burrowing Snagret and Snarrow can both be distinguished by the markings on their tails, implying that Olimar has seen its full body, or at least its tail.
