A Spray is an item in Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 3 that gives temporary abilities. In Pikmin 2, you discover that one of the new plant species, dubbed the Burgeoning Spiderwort, can grow berries that have special compositions that can be used to your advantage. When ten are collected, you obtain a single dose of the spray. There are two kinds of sprays, Ultra-Spicy and Ultra-Bitter.

A spray is an item in the Pikmin games, discovered by Captain Olimar in Pikmin 2.  They can be collected and used at any time, each with a different beneficial effect.  There are two known types of spray, Ultra-spicy and Ultra-Bitter.

Ultra-spicy spray
The Ultra-Spicy Spray is a red spray that can be obtained by gathering ten Ultra-spicy berries from a Burgeoning Spiderwort plant, or finding a concentrated dose. The first time one of these berries is found, the ship gives a short speech and then requests the two Captains to bring it another specimen. After the ship receives nine more berries, it will create an Ultra-Spicy Spray. This spray is usually discovered before the Ultra-Bitter Spray. In Pikmin 3, not only do the Pikmins' tops glow, but their whole body will turn a pinkish hue and turn leaf and bud Pikmin into flower Pikmin permanently.

Unleashing this spray on a Pikmin replaces its leaf, bud or flower with a red flashing light, similar to the one over Olimar's head. Their maximum speed becomes almost as fast as flowered White Pikmin and the affected Pikmin gain attack speed, which also improves their efficiency when deconstructing gates, constructing bridges and recovering from enemy attacks. After 40 seconds, all effects wear off. While the spray's effect can be extremely useful in many situations, caution should be observed, as drowning, burning or suffocating Pikmin sprayed with an Ultra-spicy spray will actually die more quickly than unsprayed Pikmin.
Although the spray causes most of the Pikmin to improve in terms of speed and attack, all changed attributes are set to the same value for all colors, meaning that flowered White Pikmin lose some speed and Purple and Red Pikmin lose attack strength; all Pikmin experience a gain in attack speed, however.
Ultra Spicy Sprays return in Pikmin 3, and seem to have the same effect as well as permanently transforming your pikmin in your squad into flower pikmin. They are again obtained by using the berries of Burgeoning Spiderworts. However, the pikmin seem to have their whole body tinted red and their flowers turn an orange-like color, similar to the color of the 3 in Pikmin 3s logo.
Obtained from the red berries, this spray is to be used on the Pikmin. When used, the Pikmin temporarily get enhanced strength and speed, and their leaves/buds/flowers glow red. This is helpful in tough boss fights and when you are pressed for time. However, the effects of the spray also cause Pikmin to die much quicker when succumbing to a hazard. The spray normally wears off after forty seconds. clear

The Ultra-Bitter Spray is a purple spray that the player can get from ten Ultra-Bitter Berries from the Burgeoning Spiderwort plant (but only in Pikmin 2), or by finding a concentrated dose of it from an egg, petrified creature, etc. When an Ultra-Bitter Berry is found for the first time, the ship comments that it may find other uses for it beside money, then requests another specimen; this speech is essentially the same as the speech given for the Ultra-Spicy Berry. After nine more berries are given to the ship, it will announce that it has created the Ultra-Bitter Spray. This spray is usually discovered after the discovery of the Ultra-Spicy Spray, and is much rarer than the Ultra-Spicy Spray.

Obtaining the Spray
This is obtained from purple berries. It affects enemies and not Pikmin (excluding 2-Player Battle). When used, it encases any enemies in the path of the spray in stone for approximately 9 seconds; this is often enough time to kill or severely weakened the beast. If an enemy is killed while still petrified, it crumbles without leaving behind a carcass to produce more Pikmin, instead dropping nectar or sprays.

Concentrated doses can be found by breaking eggs, defeating petrified enemies, fighting Flint Beetles, squishing the insects at the Wistful Wild, or defeating purple Unmarked Spectralids. Purple berry-producing Burgeoning Spiderworts are located in every above ground region except the Valley of Repose.
Use
This spray turns most of the creatures into stone, and with that immobilizes them. When an enemy is defeated during petrification, it will crumble to dust and leave behind one dosage of a liquid, this being either nectar or a spray. Boss-enemies, however, will drop four-five doses of liquid. The Titan Dweevil will drop ten doses. Plants and Candypop Buds cannot be petrified at all.

Petrifying enemies that are in the process of eating any Pikmin will make it possible to save those Pikmin from dying.

In 2-Player Mode, this spray can also be used to disarm the opponent's Pikmin by planting them in the ground, and thus reverting all flower- and bud Pikmin to leaves. Although the Pikmin will automatically jump back out of the ground after a few seconds, they will not regain their buds or flowers.

The player can deploy Ultra-bitter Spray by pressing the Z button in the Piklopedia. This does not affect the Ultra-Bitter spray quantity in the actual game.

When used against bosses, their defense increases slightly.

Obtaining Sprays
Both types of sprays can be made by bringing ten of the berry needed to The Ship, which will create a spray from the berries. Sprays can also be found in any places where nectar is, in the form of red or purple nectar drops. If you move your captain into one of these drops, you will collect 1 kind of spray, depending on what color the drop was. Spray Drops can be found by defeating Unmarked Spectralids, Honeywisps, and the Secret Insects at the Wistful Wild. They can also be found in eggs. The Leaders can get two sprays in one drop by using this glitch.

Beta spray
In demo images of Pikmin 2 from before its release, there was a red spray, likely the Ultra-Spicy Spray, but also a yellow spray (possibly a nectar spray) shown in the image as the bottom command on the D-pad. No exact information has been provided as to whether these were sprays at the time and if they truly did what the current sprays do now, or if they did something else.

Trivia
*Sprays may look differently colored under the varied lighting conditions of the game's caves. Normally, Ultra-Spicy Sprays appear red and Ultra-Bitter Sprays appear purple. However, as can be seen on the right, Ultra-Bitter Sprays can appear blue.

Obtaining sprays
In Pikmin 2, it is revealed that a species of plant called the Burgeoning Spiderwort produces berries that can be used to the captains' advantage. Both types of sprays can be made by returning 10 of the correct color of these berries to the ship, which then creates a spray from them. The two known berry colors, purple and red, produce the two kinds of sprays.

Sprays can also be found wherever nectar is, in the form of red or purple concentrated drops, each of which counts as one full spray. These drops can be found by breaking eggs, defeating petrified enemies, fighting Doodlebugs, Iridescent Glint Beetles and Iridescent Flint Beetles, squishing the secret Wistful Wild bugs, or defeating red Unmarked Spectralids or any petrified enemy.

This page is part of the merge with Pikmin Wiki, and needs resolving. Please bear with us as we do so.

Before the import, this subject had a page both on Pikipedia and Pikmin Wiki. You are currently reading the Pikipedia version, and the Pikmin Wiki version can be found here. Both versions need to be manually merged together and placed on the current page.

A spray is an item in the Pikmin games, discovered by Captain Olimar in Pikmin 2. They can be collected and used at any time, each with a different beneficial effect. There are two known types of spray, Ultra-spicy and Ultra-Bitter.

Ultra-spicy spray

Main article: Ultra-spicy spray.

This is obtained from red berries and is to be used on Pikmin. It has the effect of temporarily enhancing their strength and speed, and their leaves, buds or flowers glow red. This makes Pikmin more effective at fighting, building, destroying and carrying for the 40 seconds it lasts.

Ultra-Bitter Spray

This is obtained from purple berries. It affects enemies and not Pikmin (excluding 2-Player Battle). When used, it encases any enemies in the path of the spray in stone for approximately 9 seconds; this is often enough time to kill or severely weakened the beast. If an enemy is killed while still petrified, it crumbles without leaving behind a carcass to produce more Pikmin, instead dropping nectar or sprays.

Interference

When a captain is hit by an enemy, bomb-rock or something else while absorbing a concentrated dose of spray, he stops absorbing it, and it shrinks and disappears. Worst, the spray does not get collected, so it important to be careful when trying to get a spray.

Techniques

Main article: Glitches in Pikmin 2#Double sprays.

By exploiting a glitch, it is possible to absorb a single spray drop twice.
