Photo mode is a feature in Pikmin 4 in which the player can control the camera, take a photo of the scene, and then customize it. It is also the primary mode with which to find Decor Pikmin and add them to the player's Pikmin. It was added in the 1.1.0 update, and can be entered by selecting the Field Camera from the Pack, which is given to the player on day 2. Like all pack items, it can also be bound to a shortcut.
This mode consists of two sub-modes: the first is the photo mode proper, where the player can control the camera semi-freely in order to position it and face it to whatever they want, adjust the focus, and control the visibility of the player's crew and the filters applied to the scene. In the second, customization mode, the player can edit the photo taken with stamps and frames.
Normally, during either mode, the gameplay pauses, except some things can still move, like caught Decor Pikmin or the sparkling particles around treasure.
Photo mode[edit]
In the main mode, the camera can be moved forward and back, left and right, and up and down, although it is confined to an imaginary circle around its starting point and has a maximum and minimum height, which depend on the starting height. It can be rotated up and down, and left and right, but cannot be rolled. Finally, it can be zoomed in and out.
Although gameplay is paused during photo mode, it can be unpaused like the Survey Drone. The instructions on-screen and the general photo mode HUD can be toggled on or off; players wanting to take scenic pictures can turn this off and use the system's screenshot feature instead of proceeding to customization mode.
The following options exist:
- Filter: A filter can be applied to the screen by navigating through a list of 20, or disabled entirely; this applies a shader onto the game graphics in real-time, even unpaused.
- Off: No filter is applied.
- Intense: Saturates the colors, making them more vivid. Because of this, for instance, some really gray colors with a mostly imperceptible amount of red may show up as notably red.
- Moody: Desaturates the colors, making them grayer.
- Negative: Applies an unknown grayscale filter.
- Nostalgic: Adjusts the colors in an unknown way, making them slightly more sepia toned.
- Cool: Makes the color temperature cooler, making the scene more blue in general.
- Warm: Makes the color temperature warmer, making the scene more orange in general.
- Red Only: Makes everything grayscale, but colors close to red start showing up, being less grayscale the redder they are.
- Blue Only: Same as above, but for blue.
- Yellow Only: Same as above, but for yellow.
- Green Only: Same as above, but for green.
- Twilight: Adjusts the colors in an unknown way, making the blues and reds stand out.
- Sepia: Makes the colors sepia toned.
- Monochrome: Makes the colors grayscale.
- Retro: Makes the image resolution smaller and limits the number of colors like a color palette.
- Pixelated (Light): Makes the image resolution smaller, matching the previous filter's resolution.
- Pixelated (Heavy): Makes the image resolution smaller than the previous filter.
- Wavy (Light): Applies a light distortion to the image, making it wavy.
- Wavy (Heavy): Applies a heavy distortion to the image, making it wavy.
- Color Shift (Light): Introduces some light chromatic aberration.
- Color Shift (Heavy): Introduces some heavy chromatic aberration.
- Focus: Controls what is in focus and out of focus, if anything.
- Off: Everything is always in focus.
- Auto: Focus on the center point of the camera. If this center point is on anything of interest, like an object, a leader, a Decor Pikmin, and so on, it'll turn into a green rectangle and make a sound.
- Avatar: Always keep the player character in focus.
- Oatchi: Always keep Oatchi in focus. This is only available if the avatar is not riding him.
- Show Avatars: Controls the visibility of the Rookie Rescue Officer, Oatchi, and the Pikmin.
- Display All: All of them are visible as normal.
- Hide All: All of them are invisible.
- Oatchi and Pikmin: The rookie is invisible.
- Player Avatar: Oatchi and the Pikmin are invisible.

Decor Pikmin[edit]
In order to obtain a Decor Pikmin, the player must first find it in the area. Then, they must enter photo mode and aim at that Pikmin. The camera needs to be close enough to the Pikmin in order for it to work, so moving it closer or zooming in could be necessary.
Aiming at the Pikmin successfully will alert it, which will make it jump in place and face the camera, even if the gameplay is paused. This also prompts the text "Say Cheese!" to appear, telling the player to press the photo button now. A reticle also appears around the Pikmin, alongside the interstellar alphabet text
(Deco Pikmin).
Snapping the photo in this state triggers a small cutscene with the text "Decor Pikmin Found!" and the Pikmin making its pose, the same one used when selecting "Call to Attention" in the Decopedia. The player is then asked if they want to customize the photo, warning them that it won't be possible to do so later, with the options "Customize" and "Save and Keep Exploring". In order to continue playing without saving the photo to the system's album, the player must choose to customize, quit out, and choose to exit without saving.
Customization mode[edit]
In customization mode, the photo from the previous mode is taken, and the player can now place graphics on top of it to customize it. This is primarily done by placing stamps of Pikmin or some shapes or effects, but it is also possible to add a full-screen frame. Each stamp's position, size, and angle can be freely adjusted, whereas the frames are always fixed. Stamps can be applied freely, with repeats, but there is a total limit of 100; the frame does not count to this limit.
To help the player, there is an undo feature that undoes the latest placed stamp or the latest frame change. There is also a feature that removes all placed stamps and any frame; when used, a confirmation dialog window shows up to ask the player if they are sure. As with the primary photo mode, the HUD's visibility can be toggled on or off.
There are a total of 154 stamps, not counting the variations. Some stamps that show Pikmin have three variations, one for each maturity, and some have six, three showing one maturity each while the Pikmin is facing left, then three more while facing right. Stamps showing text, shape, or particles have ten variations, each one changing the color, in the following order: white, black, red, blue, yellow, blueish gray, pink, purple, cyan, green. With all of these variations in mind, the grand total amount of stamps is 1074. As for frames, there are 29 frames, plus the option to have no frame.
When the player chooses to finish, a dialog box shows up asking what the player intends to do. "Save and Exit" saves the finalized photo to the player's system album and exits photo mode. "Exit without Saving" exits photo mode without saving anything. "Keep Customizing" cancels the dialog box and returns to customization mode.
Normally there is a horizontal list of 11 stamps or 11 frames on the bottom of the screen that the player can choose from. Navigating up or down shows another row of 11 in the same page. The player can also press a button to replace the small horizontal list with a full-screen grid list that shows all of the stamps or frames in the current page, and also allows the player to switch to a different page; this is the only way to navigate through pages. The following stamps exist:
