A Data File stating that Pikmin can shield themselves from a predator's view by hiding in tall plants.

Data Files are collectables scattered around the surface of PNF-404 in Pikmin 3. They appear as glowing yellow SD Cards that float in place. Once one has been uncovered, its text can be read by clicking its icon on the KopPad screen. 

Purpose

It is through Data Files that Alph, Brittany, and Charlie gain understanding of the Pikmin and the world they come from. Data Files, when collected, provide various hints and bits of information of various topics.

Secret Memos

Secret memos are hidden data files that are scattered around the planet. There are two per area and when found they show a single number. The order of numbers found is unique to the player. There uses are unknown but on the July 30th 2013 Miyamoto made a post to the Pikmin developers' room on Miiverse.

"I don't suppose you've come across any Secret Memos while playing through the Story?

Did you know that once you've collected ten of these Secret Memos, the numbers contained in them will combine to form a special code? I'll be in touch again to explain how to use the code, so be sure to make a note of it once you have it!' - Shigeru Miyamoto"

Where to find them:

• Garden of Hope
  • A Secret Memo can be found on in the area of the "Scales" puzzle.
  • Another can be found in the overturned plant pot that a Peckish Aristocrab hides in on the path to the Quaggled Mireclops.
• Tropical Wilds
  • In a small pool in the area where the Calcified Crushblat can be found.
  • Beside the holed stump that leads to the Medusal Slurker with the Juicy Gaggle.
• Distant Tundra
  • Throw a captain onto the snow wall next to the landing site. This Memo is easily visible.
  • In the cave you originally had to take to reach the Vehemoth Phosbat is a Bamboo Wall that requires Winged Pikmin to lift. In a structure in the area behind it is a Secret Memo. Be careful as a Bulbear and Dwarf Bulbears are present in this area.
• Twilight River
  • In the second river that is reached on the way to the Scornet Maestro is a plant pot with a Secret Memo on top of it.
  • On a ledge near the three Orange Bulborbs, accessed by throwing a captain off the vine path to the Scornet Maestro's tree.
• Formidable Oak
  • In the spotcaps behind the Reinforced Wall at the beginning of the cave.
  • In the area of the cave that you must light up, is a dirt mound near a group of Candypop Buds. Use Pikmin to dig out the Secret Memo.
