Javascript woes[edit]

Hey. There have been a few difficulties with our scripts lately. Mostly in the sense of scripts that used to be running weren't running any more. I changed some things, and now almost everything is up, except for the MediaWiki:PikipediaUpload.js script. From the little that I can gather, Common.js isn't even running on Special:Upload. What can you tell me about this? — {EspyoT} 09:09, 6 November 2016 (EST)

Fixed it! --Porplemontage (talk) 11:48, 6 November 2016 (EST)
Looks like every script is working perfectly. Thank you so much! — {EspyoT} 12:02, 6 November 2016 (EST)

Question[edit]

Im curious what the first edit on this Wiki was. On what page was it? TabuuandPeach MarchShroomCertificateA.jpg 18:28, 24 November 2016 (EST)

Well, I guess this was the first non-bot edit. --Porplemontage (talk) 22:34, 24 November 2016 (EST)

Mobile captcha problems[edit]

Hey. A user found a problem while editing the wiki under mobile: link. Basically, when trying to save, the wiki asks for a "confirmation code" (captcha, I'm guessing?) but there's no such thing anywhere.

It doesn't look like this is anon-user triggered, since anonymous users can't even edit the wiki under mobile. That's also another thing – since under desktop, users can edit without an account, why can't they under mobile? If you could make anons able to edit under mobile, that'd be great, but if not, don't sweat it. I think it's more important to have the code problem solved. Me and Marty also tried to edit using smartphones, but we were never asked for such a code, so maybe this only applies to non-autoconfirmed users.

Oh, and a final thing. Do you mind if I send the older conversations here into an archive subpage? Your talk page is getting pretty heavy! — {EspyoT} 15:23, 27 December 2016 (EST)

Ok yeah, it looks like the captcha extension and mobile extension aren't playing well together. You're correct, autoconfirmed users would skip it, but now I've made it so all users skip it. We do need the captcha for anons though, so we can't enable mobile anon editing. Archive away! --Porplemontage (talk) 15:43, 27 December 2016 (EST)
Sounds good. Thanks a million! — {EspyoT} 17:18, 28 December 2016 (EST)

Parse error on Pikmin Fanon[edit]

Hey there Porple. Pikmin Fanon has been unavailable for over 24 hours because of a parse error, which reads:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ';', expecting ')' in /home/pikminfa/public_html/LocalSettings.php on line 384

I thought if I gave it time, it would go away on its own, but... Could you resolve this? Thanks. ~PikFan23 16:58, 29 January 2017 (EST)

Fixed it, thanks! --Porplemontage (talk) 16:59, 29 January 2017 (EST)

Unpatrollable uploads[edit]

Hey. If an image is uploaded, and then a new version is uploaded on top, it'll become impossible to mark the first revision as patrolled. You can find examples on the recent changes with the farthest filter. Do you think you can do something about this glitch so that it doesn't happen again? Thanks! — {EspyoT} 15:06, 14 February 2017 (EST)

This is a bug that would need to be fixed in MediaWiki core, where we'd get the fix in a future software update. I've reported it here - we'll see what happens! --Porplemontage (talk) 15:49, 14 February 2017 (EST)
Ah! Thought so. One thing though...right now, the recent changes are filled with edits about how this or that revision has been marked patrolled, and all edits also seem to have become unpatrolled now. What...exactly happened? — {EspyoT} 04:01, 15 February 2017 (EST)
Well, I rebuilt recent changes to see if those unpatrollable log entries would go away. Turned out it had some adverse effects - sorry! --Porplemontage (talk) 15:21, 15 February 2017 (EST)
Oops. Oh well, at least they look like they're working fine from here on out. Thanks! — {EspyoT} 03:57, 16 February 2017 (EST)
Hello! I see that you are an active admin. Could you tell me more about Pikipedia? While you read this, can I ask for my admin rights to change from user to admin? GoldenAxe (talk) 12:42, 13 February 2019 (EST)

Anything I need to know?[edit]

Greetings, Porplemontage. I am a Patroller of WiKirby. Currently, I am busy with multiple things there and elsewhere. However, in the near future, I may consider becoming more active around here. I'm familiar with editing wikis, but I know some wikis are quite different from each-other, regarding policies and such. That is why I've come to ask you if there is anything basic I need to know before I edit Pikipedia, and where the best place to get started is. -- MetaDragon (talk) 20:55, December 3, 2020 (EST)

Recent MediaWiki change[edit]

Shouldn't MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning only discuss specifically written content being released under (I beleive) CC-BY-SA 3.0U, as files and other media are generally uploaded with their own specific licensing? Trig - 22:06, February 1, 2021 (EST)

The CC-BY-SA license applies to written content, so the warning is shown below the edit box, where written content is added. It's not shown on the file upload page since those licenses are different. --Porplemontage (talk) 22:12, February 1, 2021 (EST)

Pikmin Fanon CSS[edit]

Hello Porple, I was wondering if you could help me making Pikmin Fanon's layout share a similarity with Pikipedia in that pages are displayed in a smaller rectangular box, while the background is displayed in the columns on either side of the article space. In Pikmin Fanon's current state, the article area runs all the way to the edge of the browser. I wanted to make it more like Pikipedia in order for Pikmin Fanon to look better on higher resolution monitors, like, say an ultrawide monitor. Thanks in advance! Wraith (Talk) 15:03, July 14, 2021 (EDT)

Hi there! I made a change so that similar to here, the right-side margin matches that of the left on wider displays. --Porplemontage (talk) 16:05, July 14, 2021 (EDT)
Thanks for the help! Much appreciated. I might want to make some more aesthetic changes in the future, but I am not sure yet of what nature. Wraith (Talk) 16:29, July 14, 2021 (EDT)

Revision highlights and FileInfo[edit]

When comparing revisions, the background highlighting color is light-blue, which I believe conflicts with the site's aesthetic. Would you or the community be willing to change it to a more Pikmin-y color, like light blue? Also, can Template:File info have light-green headings? Also, the class .suggestions-result-current has the default color of dark blue, a color that I also consider to be conflicting with the site's green aesthetic. Results May Vary (talk) 13:18, June 1, 2025 (EDT)

More[edit]

The categories box is very squished in MonoBook. Can it be more padded? Thank you! Results May Vary (talk) 13:54, June 1, 2025 (EDT)

More technical stress[edit]

.oo-ui-buttonElement-framed.oo-ui-flaggedElement-progressive.oo-ui-widget-enabled > .oo-ui-buttonElement-button:active shows light blue on an oo-ui button when clicked, even though the buttons have a custom green color. Check Special:Search, for example. Results May Vary (talk) 14:02, June 1, 2025 (EDT)

And the edit buttons (save page, show preview, and show changes) have a light-blue box shadow over in .oo-ui-buttonElement-framed > .oo-ui-buttonElement-button:focus even though the buttons are similarly customized to be green. Results May Vary (talk) 14:02, June 1, 2025 (EDT)

But wait there's more[edit]

The links are green on the sidebar and in the categories box. I wonder if they could utilize a blue color like on the Super Mario Wiki, rather than dark green atop light green.

The "S" of MediaWiki:Searchsuggest-search is slightly cut off when looked at on the sidebar. I'd also prefer the Search bar at the top, like I do for wikis that I host, but my days of telling other hows to do their wikis are long gone.

input#wpSummary is uncomfortably squished, similar to the category box. Results May Vary (talk) 14:10, June 1, 2025 (EDT)

copyrights on SMW[edit]

Hello, the primary license of the SMW is CC-BY-SA. However, before June 2010, it was the GFDL. The general disclaimer and the copyrights neither ensure the clarity of when the cutoff for GFDL content is. Warning that there's some bluntness and some bitterness, since I've had depression for nearly 15 years at this point. But I will try and be as civil as I can to the best of my ability.

From experience with talking to Lylat Wiki, every editor in existence needs to agree to a license change. You're lucky that in the past 15 years that nobody took you to court over this, which makes sense because video game franchise content, many people do not care about this stuff. Unless there's an open-ended shift from GFDL to CC-BY-SA that I'm unaware of.

Why does this question matter? Well, I'm reusing some of the SMW content on not only some the wikis I host & elsewhere, but also the token GFDL Fandom wiki, Zelda Wiki. I have a disclaimer at the bottom of each article reusing from the original source (e.g. Link on SMW). While I would personally say that a list of authors present in the history would nullify it (yes, they're in the page history), the wiki fails to make clear in which cases the GFDL can be used. And I doubt there was consultation with every editor in existence before the license change.

I don't like giving people headaches over stuff like this, but since I'm a permabanned user, well, that compelled me to try and fork the SMW through a variety of methods. I already have clear justification of doing so with the SSB content, which is basically done for on the SMW.

SMW is the sole exception that I've made for NIWA wikis on Fandom. I'm not some cheap person who wants to dump every single NIWA wiki's content into Fandom. In fact, I'm willing to go the extra mile to get every other community's stuff off of Fandom. I've informed at least a few NIWA wiki staff members about this because nobody can complain about having exclusive representation of their content off of a platform they hate, right? Someone was plagiarizing from Bulbapedia and other NIWA wikis on Nintendo Wiki there, and I handed out a two-week block because it was constant and nobody was doing anything about it. I deleted ZW's images mentioned on Bluesky because it's that idea of the "extra mile" and I'm still trying to find suitable alternatives to their content on the Fandom wiki.

SMW, on the other hand, was historically the insubordinate member of NIWA. They should've not taken over your wiki because that's created a huge mess where the wiki's old care-free and colorful culture as well as autonomy has been whittled away. They would've done better by now if they chose years ago to start a new wiki with the noncommercial clause of the Creative Commons license, so then we wouldn't be in this mess. By now it only fulfills the "Super Mario" slot needed for something like NIWA. There's been some back and forth between "pick a side" of the ole days or NIWA representative. There's actually a relative example to that: I tried editing the independent ZW but was told that I have to choose either there or my duties on Fandom--I cannot do both.

The message is clear: I'm the go-to source for old wiki nostalgia (particularly SMW), and I'm doing the first "reverse-fork" in wiki history (and simple attribution disclaimers on wikis I host). If they want to hold a candle to that, they need to "pick a side". If they want to claim to do it better than me, they can start by not calling the SMW "wet behind their ears" in 2007 (the very year that all my wiki stuff is based on, since I first read and experienced the site back in elementary school then); changing the main page, background, font, and wiki logo to look precisely like this; reinstate the Mario fansites affiliate banner at the very bottom; reverse every bad proposal without consensus (or even get rid of that system entirely); restore Userpedia to compete against Fanonpedia; squeeze every inch of coverage that they can on their wiki; delete all social media platforms; and especially revive the "Wiki Alliance" to do wikis on as many conceivable topics as possible (or even put Jiggywikki and Triforce Wiki on the main page). In fact, the "wet behind the ears" statement is why I'm exporting entire articles from the website.

Much of what I said above cannot be done because they are expected to fulfill the obligation of being the "Super Mario" representative of NIWA. They cannot choose between being NIWA culture or completely rolling back everything to how it was in the 2000s. Relative to my example of the two Zelda Wikis.

If the editors dislike this, they can consider making a new SMW that utilizes the CC-BY-NC-SA license, following Bulbapedia's lead (the German wiki is hiring!). Because CC-BY-SA approves the use of content for commercial platforms like Fandom, and SMW can't claim to be a fork to make some effort to wiggle their way out of this. Their inclusion in NIWA is more by virtue of anti-RMV nowadays (and fulfilling the slot in NIWA as mentioned) than an anti-Fandom thing, but that's solely my headcanon, and there's a few users there whom I'm on decent terms with.

If people still insist on having discussions with me about this, they can learn from their buddies at Zelda Wiki and do so civilly, or even learn to forgive me like ZW did. I hate Discord and the terrible social skills that most have there (I don't generalize), and I've matured considerably ever since my departure.

P.S. The DK Wiki merge has been done improperly--twice. Wayoshi neglected to import every revision from the DK Wiki in 2007 (only the latest), and I failed to attribute the original authors of dkwiki.com, including myself. Most of the DK Wiki content isn't "clean" enough, unless in few cases like Crosshair Cranky, where I made sure to only integrate the content from before I messed up the DK Wiki merge.
