The amiibo logo.

amiibo are a line of interactive toys created by Nintendo, with the intent of being usable in some Nintendo games. For this, they use the near-field communication chip installed on their bottom, which can be scanned by the Wii U, the Nintendo 3DS, and the Nintendo Switch's NFC readers. Some games read the amiibo and do something in-game related to the amiibo's character, but there are games that only have one action, regardless of what amiibo the player uses. On top of that, some games simply read the data on the amiibo, while others can read and write to it.

So far, only two Pikmin-related amiibo have been released: one of Captain Olimar, as a fighter in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, and one of a group of five Pikmin.

Olimar amiibo

The Olimar amiibo.

The Olimar amiibo is part of the sixth wave of the Super Smash Bros. series of amiibo in the US and Japan, and the seventh wave in Europe.

Because it is based on the Super Smash Bros. fighter, he and the Pikmin look like they do in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. In particular, they highly resemble the official artwork for Olimar. Olimar himself is in the center, and there is a bud Blue Pikmin to his left, a leaf Red Pikmin to his right, and a flower Yellow Pikmin behind him, to his right.

Game compatibility

Listed are the games in which the Olimar amiibo provides unique content. Usually, the content is inspired by the Pikmin series. There are many other games the Olimar amiibo can be used in, but it's functionality behaves no differently from any other amiibo.

  • In Hey! Pikmin, scanning the Olimar amiibo on the area selection screen will unlock a secret spot where the amiibo appears as a collectible treasure. Scanning this amiibo mid-level, via the pause menu will summon four Pikmin to help the player.
  • In Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the amiibo will unlock an Olimar-styled suit for the Mii character, with the body of the costume resembling Olimar's spacesuit, and the helmet being designed to look like a space helmet. On the back of the helmet is a Red Pikmin hanging on.
  • In Yoshi's Woolly World and Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, the amiibo unlocks an Olimar-styled Yoshi. The Yoshi is stylized to look like Olimar, and the spikes on the back of its head have the same color as the first three Pikmin.
  • In Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy +, unlocks a Pikmin and Olimar-themed aircraft for players to use in the game.
  • In Super Mario Maker, the amiibo gives players access to an Olimar costume for Mario. A Pikmin costume also exists, and is awarded randomly after completing the 100 Mario challenge, or by scanning the Pikmin amiibo.
  • In Kirby: Planet Robobot, the Olimar amiibo gives Kirby the leaf ability, representing the plant theme of the Pikmin series.
  • In Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash, a "Pikmin" Figure is unlocked by scanning the Olimar amiibo in the Chibi-Capsule machine.

The Pikmin amiibo.

This amiibo is the first and only one from the Pikmin amiibo series. It will release alongside Hey! Pikmin on July 13th in Japan, and July 28th everywhere else. It features the Red, Yellow, Blue, Rock, and Winged Pikmin types. They are resting on what appears to be concrete with grass and a screw on the base of the figure. The is the second amiibo to feature the Red, Yellow, and Blue Pikmin, but the first to feature the Rock and Winged.

This amiibo is compatible with the following games.

Pikmin-specific compatibility

  • In Hey! Pikmin, scanning this amiibo in the area selection screen will open a secret spot with this amiibo as a treasure. Scanning it again will open a secret spot featuring a treasure of another character's amiibo. Scanning it mid-level, via the pause menu, will summon some Pikmin to help the player. The number of Pikmin that come out depends on the amiibo's level, which can be increased in the Pikmin Park.
  • In Super Mario Maker, the amiibo gives players access to a Pikmin costume for Mario.
  • In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, scanning this amiibo unlocks the Olimar costume, just like the Olimar amiibo.[1]

Hey! Pikmin amiibo compatibility

Main article: Hey! Pikmin#amiibo compatibility.

Hey! Pikmin is compatible with some released amiibo, even outside of the two Pikmin-related amiibo. As mentioned above, scanning the Olimar amiibo or the Pikmin amiibo mid-level will summon Pikmin to help the player, and scanning them on the area selection screen to unlock secret spots with amiibo treasures.

Scanning amiibo from the Mario series, Animal Crossing series, or Splatoon series on the area selection screen will also unlock secret spots with those amiibo as treasures.
