The Doomsday Apparatus is the heaviest and most valuable treasure in Pikmin 2. It is a blue, heavily rusted training weight. It is found in the Wistful Wild, not too far from the landing site. Due to its weight, 100 Purple Pikmin are needed to be able to pick up this item; and even then, it takes at least a quarter of a day to carry back to the ship.

The best place to amass purples to reach 100 for the Doomsday Apparatus is the Subterranean Complex, as it has three Violet- and two Queen Candypop Buds on sublevel 8, along with many eggs and a geyser. Another good place is Bulblax Kingdom, which also has 3 Violet Candypop buds and one Ivory. This has considerably easier enemies, which can be ignored. Throughout the story, one may find it well worth to simply not use Purple Pikmin in the first place, so as to conserve them and keep them from harm to amass as many as possible before the Wistful Wild is unlocked. This saves time that would otherwise be spent entering caves to restore numbers lost in battle. Purples are a luxury when it comes to fighting; Red Pikmin are almost as strong fighters, even if they cannot stun enemies.

Weight in Pikmin 2

The label on this object says that the Doomsday Apparatus weighs 1 kilogram. This discovery has lead to a lot of confusion. Although creating a formula from this would allow easy conversion between the in-game weight units and real-world units, the theory breaks down when real-world objects are weighed and compared to the weights predicted. For example, the Proton AA treasure weighs 6 units, whereas actual AA batteries weigh as much as 25 grams.

Notes

Olimar's Journal

"Perplexing mysteries are often solved in unexpected ways. When I was studying this item earlier today, I was astounded at its unbelievable bulk. It was so heavy! I would have never been able to move it without my burly purple Pikmin. Later analysis indicated this thing is in fact some kind of heavy artillery."

Sales Pitch

"An apocalyptic weapon made of super-heavy, gravity-compressed materials of unknown origin. The fact that its great weight makes it uncontrollable is, at times, a mild detriment."
