Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U (大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズ for 3DS and Wii U?), also collectively and unofficially referred to as Super Smash Bros. 4, are the 4th games in the Super Smash Bros. series, as both games are essentially the same with some minor differences. Several Pikmin related elements return from Brawl, such as Olimar being a playable character, and the Distant Planet stage being on the 3DS version of the game. At the same time, many new elements from the Pikmin series also make a debut.

Olimar & Pikmin

Olimar returns as a veteran fighter, retaining much of the moveset he had in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Olimar is lighter in this installment.

Olimar's moves

Olimar keeps many of his standard moves from the previous game. Like every veteran, many moves have gone through a slight adjustment.

Standard Special move

Pikmin Pluck: Olimar plucks Pikmin. However, as stated, he can only carry three Pikmin, and to make the Pikmin use more strategy based, the Pikmin come in a set order (Red, Yellow, Blue, White, Purple, repeat). The Pikmin that is next in line to be thrown has a pointer above its head. In the 3DS version, all Pikmin stay in their leaf stage and cannot develop buds or flowers.

Side Special move

Pikmin Throw: He throws Pikmin, and the Pikmin, unless Purple, will latch on and attack. Purples knock the victim back. In general, Pikmin are thrown further than they were in Brawl, and Pikmin may also carry small items back if thrown at one, such as Pitfalls and Capsules.

Up Special move

Winged Pikmin: Two Winged Pikmin appear and lift Olimar and his Pikmin up. Opposite to his recovery move in Brawl, Pikmin Chain, the more Pikmin he currently has, the worse his recovery is.

File:SSB4EndofDay.png

Down Special move

Call to Order: Just like in Brawl, all wayward Pikmin are called back. Unfortunately, There are far fewer super armor frames than there were in Brawl.

Final Smash

Olimar maintains the same Final Smash, End of Day, from his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. However, the ship now plummets downward to the stage instead of falling upright. It has a larger blast radius as well.

Sakurai's Miiverse post where Alph is revealed as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Alph

Alph was first leaked by a leaker a week prior to the 3DS version's release in Japan. At the time, it was not known if Alph was a new character or an alternate costume.

A few days later, on September 11, 2014, Sakurai confirmed that Alph was an alternate costume for Olimar. He functions exactly the same as Olimar, even when it comes to the stage introduction and Final Smash. In other words, Alph still enters out of the Hocotate Ship when entering the stage, and still uses the Hocotate Ship for his Final Smash. He, like Olimar, is unable to use Rock Pikmin. Alph's model is slightly scaled-up, making him slightly larger than he was in Pikmin 3 in order to match Olimar's proportions.

Posts by Sakurai

"Pic of the day. The hero from Pikmin 3, Alph joins the battle!! He has pretty much the same set skills as Olimar since he's basically just his variation. He can't use Rock Pikmin either." [1]

"They are different characters, so they each get their own title treatment on the character-selection screen. See? It says Alph." [2]

Palette Swaps

All 8 palettes for Captain Olimar in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

Olimar retains his red spacesuit from Brawl. His green color has gone through changes, as well has his white one. Alph has green and pink suits based off of Charlie and Brittany, respectively. He also has a red suit that resembles Olimar himself.

Custom Moves

Like the other characters in the game, Olimar comes with 2 alternate moves for each of his special attacks, as well as exclusive equipment.

Standard Specials

  • Hardy Pikmin Pluck: It takes longer to Pluck Pikmin, but they are more resistant, taking more damage to kill.
  • Explosive Pikmin Pluck: Again, it takes longer to pluck Pikmin, but plucking them causes a small explosion that can damage opponents. However, Pikmin are easier to kill, and may even die without being attacked, forcing Olimar to pluck more Pikmin. The amount of damage given by the explosion also depends on the Pikmin type.

Side Specials

  • Sticky Pikmin Throw: Pikmin are harder to shake off, but they deal less damage.
  • Tackle Pikmin Throw: All Pikmin behave like Purple Pikmin and do not latch onto enemies.

Up Specials

  • Winged Pikmin Jump: The recovery is faster, but upon parting ways with the Winged Pikmin, Olimar immediately falls into the helpless state. This attack also requires to be recharged. The attack gets weaker with each consecutive use; at full charge, Olimar has a lot better vertical recovery than the regular move.
  • Mighty Winged Pikmin: The recovery has a set amount of travel distance.

Down Specials

  • Order Tackle: Upon being called back, the Pikmin travel at a high arc and damage any opponent they hit. If they were latched onto someone, there's also a chance that opponent will be brought back with them. However, the move has ending lag, leaving Olimar vulnerable.
  • Dizzy Whistle: All opponents within the vicinity of the attack gets slipped around and take slight damage, similar to Mario's cape.

Equipment

Olimar has 3 equipment classes, in addition to the standard ones, which he can equip: Pikmin, Space Suit, and Boots, which correlate with Attack, Defense, and Speed respectively. There are a total of 23 Equipment pieces that are exclusive to Olimar and Alph only.

Easter Eggs

In the Boxing Ring stage, Olimar's alias is "Veteran Astronaut". Alph's is "Astronaut in Training". This is referring to the fact that Olimar has been on many space adventures, yet Alph has only been on one known adventure.

Guidance Conversations are conversations Pit and Palutena can have on the Palutena's Temple stage. These conversations give details about a fighter Pit is facing. The Guidance Conversation regarding Captain Olimar and Alph features Pit, Palutena, and Viridi. It is written below:

Pit: "Oh, it's that explorer guy."

Palutena: "Did you know that Pikmin are named after Pikpik carrots, a vegetable native to Hocotate?"

Pit: "Huh. Guess you learn something new every day."

Viridi: "Enough with the pointless fun facts. Let's talk fighting strategy. Here's what I know about these Pikmin."

"Red Pikmin are strong!"
"Yellow Pikmin fly high!"
"Blue Pikmin have the mightiest throw!"
"White Pikmin are fastest!"
"Purple Pikmin are heavy and the most powerful!"
"Be sure you remember all this, Pit."

Pit: "Uh, right."

Palutena: "There are also Winged Pikmin that don't attack you."

"Numerous Pikmin will weigh down the Winged Pikmin. And that's when you should attack!"

Stages

Garden of Hope

Main article: Garden of Hope#In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

A stage based on the eponymous Garden of Hope will be available in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. For the most part, the layout is identical to that of the Pikmin 3 area, with some changes to make it more akin to a Smash Bros. battle arena. One of the key hazards in the area is the Peckish Aristocrab. It scuttles around, knocking down the fragmented teacup and knocking back fighters who touch it. Wild Pikmin can fix the damage caused by the crab. Fighters can destroy the teacup and the climbing stick as well.

Distant Planet

Main article: PNF-404#In the Super Smash Bros. series.

The Distant Planet stage is present as a Brawl Stage in the 3DS version. As a whole, not much has changed from Brawl, aside from some minor changes in the background. Just like in Brawl, the stage seems based off of The Forest of Hope and the Awakening Wood.

The Omega form of this stage takes away all the vegetation and leaves a simple dirt platform to fight on. This form also provides a better view of the background.

Hocotate Bomb

File:Hocotate Ship SSB4.jpeg
The Hocotate Ship Bomb item, with Olimar and Sonic looking at it.

The Hocotate Bomb is a new item in both versions of the game. On Miiverse and the Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U official website, Sakurai posted an image of Sonic and Olimar next to a small model of the Hocotate Ship, in which he stated that it is a new bomb item that, when triggered, flies up in the air, then crashes back down much like the Warp Star item. However, it should be noted that the bomb will crash down abruptly, giving no indication of when it will drop. The explosion it causes is quite big, and could result in a KO if it hits an opponent. The Hocotate Ship is still used for Olimar's Final Smash, End of Day. Oddly enough, the trophy for the Hocotate Ship actually describes this item.

Post by Sakurai

"Pic of the day. Is this a spaceship from Hocotate? No-this is a bomb SHAPED like a spaceship. After liftoff, it will drop down when you least expect it." [3]

Smash Run

A Bulborb in the Smash Run mode of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.

2 enemies from the Pikmin series appear in the 3DS exclusive mode, Smash Run.

Red Bulborb

The Red Bulborb appears in Smash Run. It is a basic enemy that attacks by charging and biting. It seems to be based off of its Pikmin 2 design, having purple eyes instead of blue. The Bulborb's attacks pack a massive punch and have a large amount of health, making them a formidable foe; arguably one of the hardest. It has a simple charging attack, a biting attack, and even a backwards jumping attack to attack players behind it. It is a semi-rare enemy to find.

Iridescent Glint Beetle

File:GlintBeetleSmash.png
The Glint Beetle in Smash Run.

The Iridescent Glint Beetle is one of the rarest in Smash Run, only appearing in small caves that are normally out of the way. It will only reveal itself after walking over its hiding place. Once it pops out, hitting it will cause it to release golden coins. The more times you hit it, the more cash you get.

Post by Sakurai

"There are other bonus characters that appear in this game, too. Here's an Iridescent Glint Beetle from the Pikmin series. Keep hitting it!! Keep hitting it for gold!!" [4]

Smash Tour

To do: Get an image of the Glint Beetle.
Care to do so?

In the Wii U exclusive mode Smash Tour, a Yellow Wollywog and the Plasm Wraith can appear on a space. The Yellow Wollywog trophy can be used on the board, and nullifies any trap that the user steps on. The Plasm Wraith trophy has can only be used in-battle, and will heal the player if they block attacks using a shield. The Iridescent Glint Beetle will also occasionally appear on the board, and will drop extra fighters if a player bumps into it.

Trophies

Trophies are a key part of the Super Smash Bros. franchise, and there are quite a few Pikmin trophies.

3DS version

A good amount of trophies from the Pikmin franchise are present in the 3DS version, but not nearly as many as the number of trophies in Brawl. They are listed below.

Name Picture Description
Olimar The trophy for Captain Olimar in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, followed by a Red Pikmin, Yellow Pikmin, and Blue Pikmin. "A veteran spaceship pilot for Hocotate Freight, Captain Olimar parters with Pikmin in Smash Bros. to help him battle. Olimar is much stronger when he's got Pikmin with him, so keep them plucked and good to go. Pikmin abilities are based on their color —learn what each is best at!"
Olimar
(Alt.)
A trophy for Captain Olimar in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, throwing a Red Pikmin while guarded by a Yellow Pikmin and a Blue Pikmin. "Pikmin aren't just good for attacking, you know. For example, when you throw them, they can pick up items on their way back. Only items that aren't very heavy, though! Also, if there's someone charging or shooting at you, a well-timed Pikmin throw can stop them in their tracks!"
Alph The trophy for Alph in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, being followed by a Red Pikmin, Yellow Pikmin, and Blue Pikmin. "Alph is a young explorer who crashed on the planet PNF-404. As the engineer of the S.S. Drake, he feels responsible for finding the missing crew and the ship after the crash. Waking up in a pond, Alph quickly encounters a tiny creature— it's a Pikmin!"
Louie The trophy for Louie in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. "Louie worked for Hocotate Freight in Pikmin 2. His appetite has gone into overdrive in Pikmin 3. Rescued from a swarm of Scornets by Alph and crew, Louie thanked them the next day by stealing all of the food they'd collected. Maybe he should work on his manners more than getting a meal..."
Hocotate Bomb The trophy of the Hocotate ship from the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. "With the outward appearance of a Hocotate Freight ship, this is actually a bomb in disguise! Arm it by throwing it on the ground, and give it a nudge if you're impatient. It'll fly up into the sky, returning a short time later and exploding. Force your foes into the landing zone!"
Red Pikmin The trophy for a Red Pikmin in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, sliding down a Sunseed Berry. "This Pikmin has a red body and a long, pointy nose. It was the first type of Pikmin Olimar ever met. In Smash Bros., they have the second highest attack power among the Pikmin. Like their fiery color suggests, they can attack with flames and withstand them."
Yellow Pikmin The trophy for Yellow Pikmin in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, showing 3 Pikmin around a Face Wrinkler. "This yellow Pikmin is sporting some pointy things on its head. Maybe those are ears? Hmm... Anyway, yellow Pikmin are immune to electricity and are the lightest Pikmin in the Pikmin series. In Smash Bros., a thrown yellow Pikmin will fly through the air in a nice curve, zapping anyone it comes in contact with."
Blue Pikmin The trophy for a Blue Pikmin in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, walking through water and beside a pink petal. "This blue Pikmin walks around with its mouth ajar. At home in the water, they're very helpful when objects are submerged and need retrieving. In Smash Bros., blue Pikmin have defense second only to purple Pikmin. They are also able to do more damage when thrown, so don't be shy about hurling them at foes."
White Pikmin The trophy for White Pikmin in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, showing a Pikmin standing on a rock. "These tiny, white Pikmin have bright-red eyes. They are the fastest of the Pikmin, perfect for finding and retrieving hidden treasure. In Smash Bros., you can use them to poison your enemies. Since they can fly the farthest of any Pikmin when thrown, use them to poison enemies from afar."
Purple Pikmin The trophy for a Purple Pikmin in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, carrying a single Dusk Pustule. "These purple Pikmin are the strongest, but they're also slower and heavier. In Pikmin, they can be thrown at animals to stun them! In Smash Bros., they're great for attacking and launching, but they've got a pretty short reach. Get close to your foe to make these little ones truly effective!"
Rock Pikmin The trophy for a Rock Pikmin in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, sitting beside a creeping burhead. "These Pikmin are made of solid rock, so they can stand up to a lot of attacks and won't get hurt when they get stepped on. They specialize in body blows, dealing a lot of damage when thrown, and they can also break right through glass and crystal. They can't latch on to other creatures, though. But that's OK—nobody's perfect!"
Winged Pikmin The trophy for Winged Pikmin in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, showing 2 Pikmin around a Juicy Gaggle. "These pink Pikmin have big, blue eyes and nice wings to help them fly. In Smash Bros., they show up to carry Olimar and friends through the air. However, how high and far they can fly is affected by how many friends they have to carry. More Pikmin will weigh them down."
Bulborb The trophy for a Bulborb in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, fighting Red Pikmin, Yellow Pikmin, Blue Pikmin, Purple Pikmin, and White Pikmin. "These creatures from the Pikmin series have snail-like protruding eyes, huge mouths, and really bad tempers. They're known for snapping at fighters and trying to trample them underfoot. If you see one in a group of enemies, you should try to take it out fast—it'll shoot off and bounce around, hitting other enemies as it goes!"
Iridescent Glint Beetle The trophy for an Iridescent Glint Beetle in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. "Hope you're not scared of bugs... In Pikmin, these guys drop nectar, but in Smash Run they drop coins instead. They hide, waiting for fighters to get too close...then strike! They're tough to catch, but your reward for success is coins, coins, coins. They'll slink away to sulk after being properly robbed."
Pellets The trophy for red, yellow, and blue pellets in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. "A crystallized nectar that contains the essence of the Pikmin's home world, these pellets are most often harvested from the plant life of the planet. Each pellet displays a number on its surface, and this number may increase over time. The Onion generates more Pikmin with bigger numbers."

Wii U version

Since the Wii U version featured many more trophies from console games, there are many more Pikmin trophies in this version. The ones known are listed below.

Name Picture Description
Olimar The trophy for Captain Olimar in the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, followed by a Red Pikmin, Yellow Pikmin, and Blue Pikmin. NA: "A veteran spaceship pilot for Hocotate Freight, Captain Olimar partners with Pikmin in Smash Bros. to help him in battle. Olimar is much stronger when he's got Pikmin with him, so keep them plucked and good to go. Pikmin abilities are based on their color—learn what each is best at!"
Europe: "Captain Olimar, veteran Hocotate Freight astronaut, joins forces with Pikmin again in this game to take on the world. Olimar isn't much of an attacker without Pikmin by his side, so you should always keep some ready. Pikmin have different abilities depending on their colour, so learn how they work to use them effectively!"

"Alph is a young explorer who crashed on the planet PNF-404. As the engineer of the S.S. Drake, he feels responsible for finding the missing crew and the ship after the crash. Brittany The trophy for Brittany in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, showing Brittany plucking a Red Pikmin. "Brittany is a part of the crew that crash-lands on PNF-404. She calls for help using her KopPad, and when Alph finally reaches her, he's got a bunch of Pikmin with him. Brittany doesn't let her deep fascination with these creatures distract her from giving Alph orders."

Charlie The trophy for Captain Charlie in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. "Charlie is the leader of the group that crash-lands on PNF-404. After he comes to, Charlie takes a look at his snowy-white surroundings and then tries to contact the rest of his crew, Alph and Brittany. Getting no response, he starts walking and spots some small creatures. Hurrah! Some yellow Pikmin!"

Louie The trophy for Louie in the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. NA: Louie worked for Hocotate Freight in Pikmin 2. His appetite has gone into overdrive in Pikmin 3. Rescued from a swarm of Scornets by Alph and crew, Louie thanked them the next day by stealing all of the food they'd collected. Maybe he should work on his manners more than getting a meal...
Europe: Louie was one of the main characters from Hocotate in Pikmin 2. In Pikmin 3, he's got a super appetite, to say the least. Alph and crew saved him from a swarm of Scornets, only for him to run off with all their food the very next day! It seems like someone should think a little less about food, and a little more about apologizing.

"While its name may remind you of the famous explorer Sir Francis Drake, this ship is actually named after Alph's grandfather. After the S.S. Drake crash-lands, Alph finds his way back to it and soon gets it working. However, the crew must locate the cosmic-drive key before the vessel can return to Koppai."

It was the first type of Pikmin Olimar ever met. In Smash Bros., they have the second highest attack power among the Pikmin. Like their fiery color suggests, they can attack with flames and withstand them."
Europe: "Telling Red Pikmin apart from the other Pikmin is easy: these ones have long, pointy noises. Also, they're red. They're the very first kind of Pikmin Olimar finds on their planet, and their high attack power makes them very useful. In this game, they can deal powerful attacks, and they're very resistant to fire damage."

In Smash Bros., blue Pikmin have defense second only to purple Pikmin. They are also able to do more damage when thrown, so don't be shy about hurling them at foes."
Europe: "The things that make blue Pikmin different from all the other Pikmin are that they have mouths and that they're pretty good swimmers. They're slightly hardier than most other Pikmin, and they do more damage when you throw them. So, as soon as you get one of these, make sure to throw it right at someone straight away!"

Europe: These purple Pikmin are much stronger than their colourful counterparts, but they're also slower and heavier. In Pikmin, they can be thrown at animals to stun them! In this game, they're good at both attacking and launching, but since they haven't got good reach, you'll need to get up close and personal with your foes first!

NA: "These pink Pikmin have big, blue eyes and nice wings to help them fly. In Smash Bros., they show up to carry Olimar and friends through the air. However, how high and far they can fly is affected by how many friends they have to carry. More Pikmin will weigh them down."
Europe: "This particular type of Pikmin has a pink body, blue eyes and...wings? Yep, they can fly, and in this game, they can even give Olimar a lift. The only thing is they'll get tired very easily, especially if they're carrying lots of other Pikmin at the same time. Go easy on them, OK?"

You can tell where it'll appear by the telltale appearance of bubbles, so watch out!"

"Pic of the day. Here's one of my personal favorites, the trophy of Brittany from Pikmin 3. She won't be joining the battle, but her model and expression is well-designed." [5]
