It can be assumed that they are somewhat similar to the [[Purple Pikmin]], at least in terms of girth and size. However, unlike Purple Pikmin, they do not stun enemies when they attack them, and throwing them does not result in a 'dive bomb' attack toward the ground. The Captains have no issue throwing the Rock Pikmin, leading to the assumption that Rock Pikmin are rock-like due to their durability, not weight. They seem too be immune to water as in the trailer while pikmin are building the tile bridge there is a rock pikmin in the water underneeth and it is not drowning. This is seen at 1:00. It has not yet been tested. It could be that they havent added a drowning animation yet so pikmin cant drown in the demo. Or it could be that the water under the bridge is shallow so any pikmin can walk in it as there is a sublevel in pikmin like that.

Rock Pikmin are a new species of Pikmin featured in Pikmin 3. They attack slower and simply appear to be rocks with pikmin's eyes, limbs, and violet flowers, just like the Magenta Pikmin. However the "rock" is most likely a hard outer shell, and seems to be hollow (other than than the Pikmin's vital organs). It seems as if they will not be able to lay down like the red Pikmin when they are idle. They also make a different sound when thrown (in comparison to the other Pikmin). The main part of their body seems to be a grey texture of graphite that reflects light, while the 'skin' on the arms and legs of Rock Pikmin appears grey or black. When Rock Pikmin are dismissed, their sprouts glow gray. Their ghosts are grey, round, and lack appendages. They are the only confirmed new Pikmin for the moment.

Abilities

Rock Pikmin have rock-hard bodies; they can break crystal barriers and are very tough.

They appear to be able to carry the same normal capacity as any other Pikmin. Despite their increased strength, they have a setback; Rock Pikmin cannot latch onto their targets, as they bounce off and roll back. Instead, they will repeatedly attack enemies by charging headlong into them.[1]

File:Pikmin 3 GT gameplay
At 1:21, a crystal ball lands on top of 3 Rock Pikmin, which are temporarily stuck underneath it. At 1:32, you can see them break the crystal, and come back to the leader.

Rock Pikmin cannot be crushed by enemies or projectiles. When they have been hit by a heavy object Rock Pikmin will stay buried in the ground and pull themselves out after a short period of time.

It can be assumed that they are somewhat similar to the Purple Pikmin, at least in terms of girth and size. Due to their unique properties, it could be assumed they would be very useful, if not vital, in certain combat situations, such as breaking off the armor of the Armored Mawdad.
