Ultra-spicy spray (ゲキカラスプレー?) is a red-colored spray that is mainly concocted by gathering ten ultra-spicy berries, or obtained from concentrated doses. When used, the effects depend on the game, but in general the spray causes Oatchi and the player's Pikmin to become faster and more efficient at their tasks, and may also bloom them into the flower stage instantly.

Obtaining[edit]

One dosage of the spray can be obtained in the following ways:

Use[edit]

The following article or section is in need of assistance from someone who plays Pikmin 4.
Particularly: Check what happens if the player tries to use a spray when Oatchi is unconscious and there are no Pikmin in the area.

If the player has at least one spray available, they can use one dosage by pressing the + Control Pad down on the GameCube controller / the 2 Button on the Wii Remote / the Down Directional Button on the Switch (dual Joy-Con) in Pikmin 2, the + Control Pad up on the Wii U GamePad / the + Control Pad up on the Wii Remote / the + Control Pad up on the Wii U Pro Controller (or by tapping the The icon for Ultra-Spicy Spray used in data files when using the stylus mode in Pikmin 3. button on the Wii U GamePad in Stylus Mode) in Pikmin 3, or the Y Button on the Switch + the Left Stick up on the Switch (dual Joy-Con) in Pikmin 3 Deluxe.

If the player tries to use a spray while neither Oatchi nor any Pikmin that could benefit from it, nothing will happen, and no spray will be deducted from the total.

In all games, if the player sprays an already spicy Pikmin, the duration of the spray will be reset. Interestingly, if the player uses an ultra-bitter spray on a spicy Pikmin, it will also reset its spicy mode duration.[1]

In Pikmin 2 exclusively, the first time in a saved game the player uses a spray will trigger a cutscene, but the spray duration timer for the Pikmin in the cutscene will continue to go down during it until the world is paused and the Ship's dialogue box appears.

Effects[edit]

When used, the spray affects different targets in different games:

  • Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 3: Affects all Pikmin in the current leader's squad, regardless of distance.
  • Pikmin 4: Affects all Pikmin in the field (except sprouts), and also affects Oatchi and Moss.

The effects wear off after 40 seconds in Pikmin 2. They wear off after 30 seconds in Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 4, though the Pikmin keep their newly-gained flower maturity.

If Pikmin enter an Onion or the Hocotate ship, or are converted into a sprout, they will lose their spicy status.

Practical effects[edit]

In Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 4, any sprayed Pikmin will be instantly upgraded from a leaf or bud into a flower, and cannot be downgraded for the spray's duration.

In all games, each Pikmin's maximum running speed is changed: in Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 3 they become nearly as fast as flowered White Pikmin, and in Pikmin 4 each Pikmin type will receive its own speed boost, which is faster than their speed as a flower.

Affected Pikmin also receive a general increase in task speed, which affects their attack frequency, their efficiency when taking down gates, constructing bridges, and recovering from being knocked down.

Pikmin carrying objects have their attributes changed in a different way. In Pikmin 2, all the spray does is make the Pikmin behave as if they are flower Pikmin, meaning that spraying a group that is already all flowers is a complete waste. If the effects of the spray wear off while the Pikmin are carrying the object, they will continue carrying at the same speed as if they were powered up, until they deliver the object or drop it. This makes this exploit particularly useful when retrieving the Doomsday Apparatus, and due to an oversight can also be used to manipulate the treasure's carrying speed. In Pikmin 3, it sets the Pikmin to the same carrying speed as a standard-type flower Pikmin, meaning that White Pikmin actually become slower carriers. In this game, the previously mentioned exploit with the timer running out mid-carrying does not exist.

Technically, any Pikmin type's attack power is changed to 10 in Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 3, and their attacking/obstacle-clearing speed increases to around 180%. This means that Purple Pikmin and Rock Pikmin experience a decrease in power, while Winged Pikmin, White Pikmin (in Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 4), and Ice Pikmin get a larger boost in power. Still, the increase in speeds makes up for those power nerfs.

To note however is that in Pikmin 2, a Pikmin that is attacking without being latched on (evident by them first jumping at the target before landing a blow) will not be sped up.

Aesthetic effects[edit]

In Pikmin 2, an affected Pikmin's leaf, bud, or flower will be replaced with a pink flashing light, similar to the one attached to a leader's helmet. In Pikmin 3, and Pikmin 4, Oatchi, Moss, and the affected Pikmin's leaf or flower will receive an orange glow, while their body glows pink. In Pikmin 4 exclusively, the Pikmin voices also get pitched up.

Side effects[edit]

While the spray's effect can be extremely useful in many situations, caution should be observed, as drowning Pikmin sprayed with an ultra-spicy spray will actually die more quickly than unsprayed Pikmin. In Pikmin 2, burning and suffocating Pikmin will also perish sooner, but in Pikmin 3, burning spicy Pikmin last just as long as normal ones (although their death animation runs faster than normal).

In Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 3, because the Pikmin's running speed is slightly less than a flower White Pikmin, spraying a group of flower White Pikmin will actually make them walk ever so slightly slower.

Badges[edit]

In Pikmin 3 Deluxe, there is a badge the player can gain from using an ultra-spicy spray:

  • Power Surge: Use a dose of Ultra-Spicy Spray.

Analysis revealed that the essence obtained from the red berries of the "Burgeoning Spiderwort" plant, which was newly discovered during this expedition, is a surprisingly spicy substance. For the sweet-toothed Hocotatians, just one drop of this spicy essence is lethal, but when sprinkled on Pikmin, it turns out to be very exciting for them. Fortunately, there was an empty bottle among the unsold junk, so it was decided to diligently fill it.
