Rock Pikmin are the seventh type of Pikmin announced for the Pikmin series, found in Pikmin 3 and first seen at E3 2012. Their appearance is unlike that of most other Pikmin: their bodies consist of a roughly-shaped piece of rock, and their flowers are purple instead of pink or white. Rock Pikmin are capable of breaking hard objects, including a type of gate that appears to be made of glass and the shell of the Armored Mawdad boss.

This Pikmin are the second type of Pikmin you discover in the demo of Pikmin 3.

Abilities

Rock Pikmin have rock-hard bodies; they can break crystal barriers and are very tough.

They appear to be able to carry the same normal capacity as any other Pikmin. Despite their increased strength, they have a setback; Rock Pikmin cannot latch onto their targets, as they bounce off and roll back. Instead, if left occupied, they will repeatedly attack enemies and obstacles by charging headlong into them.[1] Rock Pikmin also ocassionally unleash additional damage to targets they hit by causing a "thump".

At 1:21, a crystal ball lands on top of 3 Rock Pikmin, which are temporarily stuck underneath it. At 1:32, you can see them break the crystal, and come back to the leader.

Rock Pikmin cannot be crushed by enemies or projectiles. When they have been hit by a heavy object, Rock Pikmin will stay buried in the ground and pull themselves out after a short period of time.

It can be assumed that they are somewhat similar to the Purple Pikmin, at least in terms of girth and size. However, unlike Purple Pikmin, they do not stun enemies when they attack them, and throwing them does not result in a 'dive bomb' attack toward the ground. The Captains have no issue throwing the Rock Pikmin, leading to the assumption that Rock Pikmin are rock-like due to their durability, not weight. Due to their unique properties, it could be assumed they would be very useful, if not vital, in certain combat situations, such as breaking off the armor of the Armored Mawdad.

Trivia

In the Happy Ending of the first Pikmin game, there were black onions flying off the planet.
