Unlike the previous Pikmin games this game is a 2.5D sidescroller as opposed to a 3D Real Time Strategy.
Unlike the previous Pikmin games, which were 3D real-time strategy, this game is a 2.5D sidescroller. Players control Captain Olimar left or right on the ground, since it doesn't look like he can jump, and also vertically when climbing a vine or underwater. Players can whistle Pikmin from anywhere on the screen, which brings them to Olimar's side, and once there, can be thrown by him to wherever the player taps. With the help of the Pikmin, the player must defeat enemies and collect treasures.

Gameplay happens on the bottom screen, although both screens show the action. Captain Olimar lands on the stage after being beamed down by a blue ship that highly resembles the Research Pod. Pikmin that are thrown at branches from below go up through them and land on top of them. Pikmin thrown close to a task like a pile of bridge fragments will automatically walk towards it and begin working on it. Enemy health is represented with a horizontal bar, unlike the pie chart of previous games. Blue Pikmin thrown while underwater are tossed in a straight line instead of an arc. Obstacles that need to be weighed down have some circles on them that light up whenever a new Pikmin is added. When all circles are lit, the obstacle is successfully crushed.

There are some golden nut-like objects that seem to be important, since they're shown several times throughout the gameplay footage.

Plot
Nothing about the game's plot is currently known, other than the fact that the player controls Captain Olimar. As such, it is not if this game is canon.

Pikmin for Nintendo 3DS (working title) is an upcoming Pikmin game revealed to be released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2017. The game was announced on the September 1st, 2016 Nintendo Direct[1], where some gameplay information and footage was shown.

Gameplay
