(I've been researching Pikmin speed on expeditions, and it's actually surprisingly complicated. Restructured the article and added what I've been able to definitively work out about speed so far.)

The amount of Pikmin that can be assigned to each expedition is equal to twice the item's weight. This does not adjust for Pikmin with carrying strength buffs, so the player can, for instance, assign two [[Purple Pikmin]] to an item that weighs only one.
There is a chance for Pikmin on an expedition to return with a [[postcard]]. This postcard can be collected alongside the [[fruit]] or [[seedling]] the Pikmin was carrying, and will be shown on the screen, temporarily interrupting gameplay. The postcard will be an image of the area the Pikmin collected the fruit or seedling from, and it will show them posing in that location.


The time expeditions take can actively vary as the player moves about. For instance, if one was to set Pikmin to collect an item far away and then go to that item themselves, the Pikmin would not have to bring the item back to where the player was when the expedition was started, instead bringing it to the player directly. Similarly, if a player sets an expedition and then moves away from the item's location, the Pikmin will have to cover that increased distance on their way back.
If a Pikmin is at max [[friendship]] level, an expedition to a gift box will appear. Only the Pikmin who is at max friendship can complete this expedition, and the gift box in question will be located where the Pikmin's [[seedling]] was discovered. When this expedition is completed and the gift collected, the Pikmin will jump into the gift box and come out as a [[Decor Pikmin]].

However, different Pikmin types have different traits, and mixing them can produce different results. An expedition has 2 stages: first, the Pikmin run from the player's starting location to the location of the expedition. Then, they pick the item up and carry it back to the player. Carrying speed is slower than running speed, and both speeds are affected by how many Pikmin are sent on the expedition. The time it takes for the Pikmin to carry the item back also depends on the player's movement, as the expedition will not be over until the Pikmin reach the player's current location. If the player moves away from the expedition, it will take more time, and if they move towards it, it will take less time.


Expeditions can be accessed in three ways:
[[Red Pikmin]], [[Yellow Pikmin]], and [[Blue Pikmin]] all have the same speed. Since the speed is determined by the amount of carrying force and not necessarily the number of Pikmin, [[Purple Pikmin]] are faster due to their increased carrying weight. [[White Pikmin]] are also faster than the base types, though they are not as fast as Purple Pikmin unless large numbers are sent. [[Rock Pikmin]] are faster than the base types in the same way Purple Pikmin are, though they are not as fast as Purple Pikmin. [[Winged Pikmin]] are by far the fastest type, but unlike the other types, if they carry in combination with another type, the speed will be reduced to be closer to the speed of the other type.
