Red Pikmin are the first variety of Pikmin identified in all three Pikmin games. Aside from their color, the distinguishing feature of red Pikmin is their pointed noses. They spend nights in the red Onion. Of the three Pikmin types in the first game, they have the greatest attack strength, and are superseded in that ability only by purple Pikmin in Pikmin 2, though their high strength is removed in 2-Player Battle to make them equal to Player 2's blue Pikmin.

Abilities

Red Pikmin have spiked noses, giving them an attack stat slightly above average, at 15. This gives them the highest attack stat in Pikmin, and second highest in Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 3, surpassed by purple Pikmin in Pikmin 2, and rock Pikmin in Pikmin 3. They have an average mobility, and are especially useful in battle.

Red Pikmin also exhibit an immunity to fire, possibly due to their noses, though no explanation to their immunity to fire is ever revealed. This immunity to fire is most useful in Pikmin, where fire geysers are indestructible, and Fiery Blowhogs are present, mostly in The Forest Navel. Their ability is less useful in Pikmin 2, where fire geysers are able to be destroyed by any Pikmin, and Fiery Blowhogs can easily be defeated with purple Pikmin. Their main use here is for taking care of Fiery Bulblaxes, though this task doesn't always require them. In Pikmin 3, their ability is slightly more useful, as fire geysers, although rare, are once again indestructible. Fiery Blowhogs are easily able to be taken out by Rock Pikmin, but the fact that they do not latch onto enemies leaves red Pikmin with the best choice.

Discovery

In Pikmin, red Pikmin are the first type of Pikmin ever discovered, and they keep this trait in both sequels. They are discovered in The Impact Site, along with their Onion, and is the first time Olimar ever saw a Pikmin. Here, 25 red Pikmin must be grown in order to carry back the Main Engine, so that Olimar can exit the planet's surface during the night.

In Pikmin 2, the first red Pikmin are found by Captain Olimar. There are 5 Pikmin fighting a Dwarf Red Bulborb. Afterwards, once Louie has regained consciousness, he walks a short distance and finds the red Onion. From there, Louie builds up the population in order to reunite with Olimar and collect the Courage Reactor.

In Pikmin 3, once Charlie is captured by the Vehemoth Phosbat, Alph wakes up in a small puddle. He walks a sort distance before seeing a red Pikmin, which surprises both of them. He finds the red Onion and frees it from the branch. He proceeds to grow his army up to 20 so that he can push the Cardboard Box and get back to the S.S. Drake, as well as try to rescue the Brittany.

Brawl trophy.

Red Pikmin appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a trophy and a type of Pikmin Olimar can pull from the ground via Pikmin Pluck. Red Pikmin, like in the games, deal a high amount of damage (in Brawl, purple Pikmin only have higher knockback, but do less damage to foes than Red Pikmin). Also, red Pikmin have fiery properties and are immune to fire attacks such as Bowser's Fire Breath or Mario's Fireballs. The Brawl trophy description reads as followed:

"A type of Pikmin--which are odd beings who grow like plants yet are as mobile as animals. Red ones are heat and fire resistant and are strong attackers, which makes them valuable when facing dangerous foes. Purple Pikmin are also tough fighters, but since it's difficult to increase their numbers, red Pikmin are easier to manage. Red Pikmin have distinct pointed noses."

To obtain the Red Pikmin trophy, the player must clear Event Match 14.

Smash 3DS trophy.

Red Pikmin appear again alongside Olimar and Alph in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U, functioning mostly the same as they did in Brawl. The trophy description in the 3DS version reads as follows:

"This Pikmin has a red body and a long, pointy nose. It was the first type of Pikmin Olimar ever met. In Smash Bros., they have the second highest attack power among the Pikmin. Like their fiery color suggests, they can attack with flames and withstand them."

  • The first piece of downloadable content in Animal Crossing: City Folk was a hat item called "Red Pikmin". The item covers all of the character's head except the face and stems out into a leaf. It could be sent to other regions through befriending Japanese players. The same item was later made available in Europe and then North America (3/25/09 as the second DLC item). It is worth 360 Bells.
  • A rectangular pot with a red, blue, and yellow Pikmin planted in it is a furniture in Animal Crossing: City Folk. It can only be obtained by hacking, however.
  • A Red Pikmin can be found in Streetpass Mii Plaza by playing Find Mii.
  • Red Pikmin become obsolete early in Pikmin 2, as all manner of fire hazards in the game can be easily destroyed without the use of red Pikmin. Their greater attack strength also becomes negligible, as purple Pikmin can also be brought to any area that red Pikmin can go to.
