In Pikmin 4, Wild Pikmin in caves appear to supplement your squad. Pikmin that appear in caves do so regardless of whether you have discovered their Onion in the overworld, and you will be allowed to keep the Pikmin on future days- although you will not be able to grow more through nutrients until the Onion is found.

Wild Pikmin spawn conditions

Wild Pikmin will only be available if their spawning will not break the 100 Pikmin limit. This is unrelated to your Flarlic total. If you enter a sublevel with a Pikmin total close to the limit, but not at 100, the game will perform the following procedures:

• First, the game will despawn any wild Pikmin that meet their despawn conditions.
• Next, the game checks how many Pikmin will exist if all remaining wild Pikmin are spawned. If this number is less than 100, they are spawned, but if it is greater than 100, it continues.
• All wild Pikmin groups will turn into Candypop Buds of the matching colour.
• Finally, if any Candypop Buds spawn in locations unable to support them (such as side-turned plant pots and tall ledges), they will be despawned.
  • If a wild Pikmin would despawn into a Candypop Bud, the Candypop Bud is placed.
  • If the wild Pikmin group that they replaced would despawn into a nectar egg otherwise, no nectar egg is placed.
