The snareshell family is a family of mollusks introduced in Pikmin, although the family went unclassified until Pikmin 4. It consists only of one member, the Pearly Clamclamp, which belongs to the Ostrum genus.

MembersEdit

Pearly ClamclampEdit

Main article: Pearly Clamclamp.

Scientific name: Ostrum mandimuscae/Lapis regrettabilis (Pikmin Player's Guide)

The Pearly Clamclamp is an enemy in Pikmin and Pikmin 4. This large bivalve has a pinkish shell, and inside, a small pearl or item surrounded by a clear blue membrane. Their inner weak point can be attacked by Pikmin.

NamingEdit

The family name is a combination of "snare", meaning to lure to bait for capture, and shell. This perfectly describes the Pearly Clamclamp's behavior.

The genus Ostrum seem to be based on the latin word for oyster, ostreum. Unofficially, the genus Lapis was used for the family in the Pikmin Player's Guide, which is Latin for "stone".

Names in other languagesEdit

The following article or section is in need of assistance from someone who plays Pikmin 4.
Particularly: Document names in other languages.

Language Name Meaning
  Japanese オトリガイ科?
Otori gai ka
Bait shellfish family
  French trappobivalves
  German Fallenmuscheln Trap shells
  Korean 미끼조개 과
Portuguese Suruciladídeos From "sururu" (charru mussel) and "cilada" (trap)

TriviaEdit

  • The family may have been intended to be named the Ploister family in Pikmin, as this is the technical name of the Pearly Clampclamp in the Pikmin Player's Guide. These technical names often incorporate the name of the family the creature belongs to.
