Main article: Armored Mawdad.

Scientific name: Tuberclipeum rex

Armored Mawdad is the first boss in Pikmin 3, and the boss of the Garden of Hope. It is a massive beast with a multitude of small gecko-like legs, a large head, yellow eyes, a bluish-green underbelly, a gaping mouth, large curved mandibles, and a shell covering the majority of its body. The boss crawls about and is able to climb up the sides of walls as a means of fleeing. Its shell and mandible are made out of crystal and can be broken by Rock Pikmin disarm the creature and expose its soft skin underneath.

Naming[edit]

The family name mawdad contains maw, a word used to describe the thick jaws of a predator, which the Armored Mawdad possesses. The name as a whole is likely based on the word "crawdad", another name for a crayfish.

The family genus, Tuberclipeum, includes the word "tuber". This is because potatoes are a type of tuber, in reference to the Japanese name of the Armored Mawdad, which contains the word "potato". The word clipeum, meanwhile, is Latin for "shield", in reference to the Mawdad's crystal shell.
