The Snow Bulborb (ユキチャッピー?, lit.: "Snow Chappy") is a cave-dwelling enemy in Pikmin 2. Like most other Dwarf Bulborbs, Snow Bulborbs are members of the breadbug family that mimic genuine adult Bulborbs, those being Hairy Bulborbs in their case. While they look very similar, they noticeably lack hair.

They are small bipedal creatures equipped with a pair of eyes on stalks, two fangs on either side of their mouth, two toes on each leg; each having a single claw, and a curved snout. Unlike Dwarf Red Bulborbs who have red backs, white spots and a beige-colored body, Snow Bulborbs have a white back, blue spots, and a dark brown body.

They are notably the first subterranean species discovered in Pikmin 2, first encountered in the Emergence Cave. They are exclusively found underground, almost always in sublevels set in snowy caves, and usually around Hairy Bulborbs.

Behavior[edit]

Snow Bulborbs are mainly idle, sniffing the ground around them, waiting for prey to wander past. If any are spotted, they will make a chirp-like sound before giving chase. Snow Bulborbs won't wander too far from their territory, and if they are lead out of it, they will just wander back into it. Despite their weak nature, they have the same vision range as both other Dwarf Bulborbs.

These creatures attack by biting. If they have managed to capture a Pikmin in its mouth, they'll slowly chew them up before swallowing them. If the Snow Bulborb is defeated during this time, the Pikmin can be freed. They are only able to bite one Pikmin at a time. If they are being attacked instead, they are able shake off Pikmin.

Strategy[edit]

The following article or section contains guides.
The strategies shown are just suggestions.

With Pikmin[edit]

Snow Bulborbs are weak even by Dwarf Bulborb standards. Throwing a single Pikmin onto its back will instantly kill it, but it's worth noting that their health is so low that swarming them with any modestly sized group of Pikmin will almost certainly kill it before it can successfully attack or even eat any of them. Purple Pikmin home onto them if thrown nearby, making them exceptionally effective.

Alternate methods[edit]

If attacking with just a leader, simply punch it to death while running around it to evade its slow bites. Even without the Rocket Fist upgrade, they are so weak that the fight will be over in moments.

Notes

Olimar's notes

Like the dwarf red bulborb, the snow bulborb is a member of the breadbug family that seeks to survive through imitating the appearance and behavior of a bulborb. Its pale coloration and blue spots make for easy identification. In particular, this organism mimics the hairy bulborb, but it is of course unable to grow the hair that gives the hairy bulborb its name. However, as the hairy bulborb has been known to lose its hair in certain circumstances, the snow bulborb is an effective mimic that is often mistaken for a member of the same species.

Louie's notes

Best grilled and served hot over a bed of fresh spinach and crumbled blue cheese.

Nintendo Player's Guide[edit]

Since they're found in the snowy cave sublevels, white Snow Bulborbs tend to blend into their surroundings. As is the case with other small Bulborbs, you can squash the creatures with direct hits. No Pikmin can do the job better than purples.

Naming[edit]

See more: Breadbug family#Naming.
  • Common name: Snow Bulborb. This enemy's white color and tendency to be in cold environments explain why it is called "Snow" Bulborb.
  • Japanese nickname: ユキチャッピー?, lit.: "Snow Chappy". Chappy is the Japanese name for "Bulborb".
  • Japanese name: シラガデメマダラモドキ?, lit.: "Pseudo Spotted White-haired Bug-eye".
  • Scientific name: Pansarus pseudooculii frosticus. Frosticus is similar to the English word "frost".
  • Internal names: Internally, its name is yellowkochappy, which follows the same internal naming as the Dwarf Red Bulborb, but with "yellow" at the start, considering that in earlier versions of the game, these Bulborbs were yellow.
  • Prerelease: None.

Trivia[edit]

  • As with most other breadbug mimics, petrifying one in the Piklopedia, throwing Pikpik carrots and allowing the creature to thaw will dramatically increase the speed they both move and eat.
  • While likely coincidental, Whiptongue Bulborbs share a very similar color scheme to Snow Bulborbs.
  • The Snow Bulborb is the only Bulborb mimic that does not share the same subspecies name as its grub-dog counterpart.
  • Snow Bulborbs, much like Hairy Bulborbs, are extensively used in various unused and template caves, likely as placeholders or to test enemy spawns. This possibly stems from their origin as yellow Bulborbs, which were often seen as placeholders in prerelease material.
