A Shearwig on the ground.

Shearwig

Himeagea volaris

Shearwigs are enemies in both Pikmin games. They are male, resembling green, orange-winged Sheargrubs. They are slightly more aggresive than the Male Sheargrub, and take leave of the ground to hover up high after having lost most of their health; this allows their health to steadily return. While up in the air, these creatures are still within the reach of a Pikmin throw, of which just one accurate button-press is enough to kill one. The Shearwig also destroys bridges, just like the larvae.

Shearwigs are not seen as often as the other two members of the Mandiblard Family, and are most often to be found away from water, due to the fact that both -grubs and -wigs are damaged by water; an above ground location of a group of Shearwigs is near the landing site of the Perplexing Pool.

Notes

Olimar's Notes

Unusual for their genus, flying mandiblards have retained their wings. However, only the adult males of this species can fly. Females of this species spend most of their life span underground. They do emerge for a period after maturation to spawn, but they never metamorphose.

Louie's Notes

Grate this beast into a zest and whisk with sugar, cream, and chopped dark chocolate for a lusciously indulgent mousse that's a true culinary coup de grace!

How to Kill

Pikmin 1

Swarm it until it flies upwards, then throw a Pikmin at it for the kill. It doesn't fly very high so yellows are not necessary. Take warning that the Shearwig shares the male Sheargrub's invincibility trick while grasping a Pikmin, so throw a Pikmin on its back for a quick kill if this happens.

Pikmin 2

Simply swarm them and shoot them down if they get airborne. Like the male Sheargrub, it loses its invincibility while biting down on a Pikmin.
