Scornets are tiny hornet-like cone-shaped creatures in Pikmin 3 that are lead by the Scornet Maestro.

These enemies are capable of making coordinated formations that are capable of capturing and eventually killing your Pikmin swarm, by picking up your Pikmin, and then flying around the Scornet Maestro, which you can free by throwing a Pikmin at them. If a captured Pikmin is not freed, over time it will be carried away and lost. The first swarm of about 30 individuals appears just after a lily pad river ride, completely harmless to the player and their Pikmin. When found alone, these creatures as much less uniform and easier to defeat. The only other swarm found is during the Scornet Maestro boss fight, and use three different attacks, the cone, rectangle, and circle attack. In Mission Mode a group of 30 scornets are in Twilight River Remix.

Notes

Pikmin 3 Prima Guide

"Scornets are flying creatures that congregate in large swarms. When Scornets attack, they move into a tiny formation and fly toward their enemies. Any Pikmin unfortunate enough to be skewered by a Scornet will be carried around the area until they succumb to their injuries.

Use a large squad of Winged Pikmin to quickly clear out a Scornet Swarm. Gather your Pikmin each time the Scornets move into formation, then resume your attacks when the enemies separate. If any of your Pikmin are skewered by a Scornet, use your Winged Pikmin to defeat the enemy before the skewered Pikmin expires."

Battle Strategy

Using ground based Pikmin is practically useless. The best way to defeat a swarm is to use large amounts of Winged Pikmin in order to outnumber them. These enemies look similar to the Scornet Maestro which controls them using its harp-like beak. A group of Scornets is found shortly before you get to the Scornet Maestro, hovering around aimlessly on the far side of the river. Their attacks are uncoordinated and their dead bodies are not retreivable. When you fight an organized army of them in the boss battle, all 100 of their bodies are retreivable. It is not recommended to come back for more of their bodies, because they are worth only one seed, and it is a long run to and from the ship.

Trivia

  • The Scornet is very similar to the Sonic the Hedgehog series enemy Mosqui.
  • The Scornets are very similar to Pikmin, they are controlled by an instrument like object, and are harmless and defenseless on their own.
