The Withering Blowhog (アオケダタラ^?) is an enemy in Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 4. Withering Blowhogs are a smaller variation of the Puffy Blowhog, and have orange-red skin with yellow spots that seem to form a flame design and a white underside. They also seem to have two whisker-like appendages under their snouts that are white in color. When Pikmin are nearby, they unleash gusts of air (or orange gas in Pikmin 4) which, although significantly weaker than a Puffy Blowhog's breath, will cause the Pikmin's flowers to instantly wilt. Withering Blowhogs can also reach Pikmin behind gates or thin walls, which makes destroying a gate guarded by one an incredibly frustrating task. To attack one, several Pikmin must be thrown onto its body, or at least one Purple Pikmin. The weight will ground the Blowhog for a few seconds, utterly helpless; they have less vitality than Puffy Blowhogs, but several attacks may still be needed depending on how many Pikmin are on hand. When defeated, they deflate like a balloon. In Pikmin 4, they can also wilt sprouts, and can rapidly escape after shaking off Pikmin by blowing a burst of gas, flying off and reappearing a short distance away.

After blowing air, they will giggle in happiness, but will only do this if Pikmin get knocked down. Purple Pikmin will not be knocked back, but will wilt anyway.

In Pikmin 4, they will try to fly away and not attempt to blow if the Pikmin squad being targeted is under the effects of the ultra-spicy spray, as powered-up Pikmin can't be withered as long as the effect lasts.

Although one might think that the a Withering Blowhog is far out of reach of the leaders down below, the Rocket Fist is actually capable of hitting the creature while in the air with its third punch, but each hit does so little damage that trying to kill it in this manner would be extremely time consuming.

In 2-Player Battle, the Withering Blowhog is one of the selections on the roulette. When chosen, these creatures appear near the opponent's Onion, and act the same as they do in the main story mode.

Throw Pikmin (preferably Yellow Pikmin) at it, taking care to avoid its attack, as the loss of flower Pikmin can be frustrating. If there are aggressive enemies near it, be sure to defeat them first, or casualties might occur.

Naming[edit]

Common name: Withering Blowhog. This blowhog's main ability is to wither away Pikmin's flowers and buds, hence the name.
Japanese nickname: アオケダタラ^?. The name includes the word たたら^? (lit.: "tatara"), which refers to a type of furnace known for its large bellows. This refers both to the creature's strong breath and flame pattern. The meaning of アオケ^? is unknown, but it may be derived from 扇ぐ^? (lit.: "to fan").
Japanese name: ミカゼアオケダタラ^?, lit.: "Seed Wind Aokedatara".
Scientific name: Sus decrepitia. It uses the main genus name on the blowhog family, and decrepitia is very similar to the Latin word decrepita, meaning "feeble". This is because of its ability to weaken Pikmin.
Internal names: Internally, it is known as hanachirashi, where hana is はな^? (lit.: "flower"), and chirashi means ちらし^?, with one of the possible translations being "scattering". This name could have been decided due to the fact that when a Pikmin's flower is blown off, its petals scatter everywhere.

Trivia[edit]

In the Japanese version and in an early version of the English translation, the plant withering hormone is said to be an ethylene-like compound.^[1]
Interestingly, when the game is paused or a cutscene is active, the light bands of color that flash across the Blowhogs' skin will still move, even if the Blowhog itself is motionless.
The Withering Blowhog resembles the iwagen, an unused object in Pikmin.
