The Skitter Leaf (ハンボ?, lit.: "Leaf Pond Skater") is an enemy found in Pikmin 2, Pikmin 3, and Pikmin 4. It resembles a leaf. Skitter Leaves remain camouflaged on the ground until approached by leaders or Pikmin, at which time they attempt to flee with a cricket-like chirp. They are somewhat rare, usually located in very fresh places, such as near or in water or foliage, but they are not worth defeating or recovering. This is because the leaf they leave upon death, while only requiring one Pikmin to carry, yields only a single Pikmin seed, or one Poko/Sparklium .

Biology[edit]

The Skitter Leaf, when it is hiding, looks like a small leaf on the ground, making it seem like it's part of the scenery. When approached, however, it will leap up, revealing feet with a similar pattern to the leaf on its back, and bulgy red eyes. What the stem would be on a leaf is actually the Skitter Leaf's mouth, and due to its small, tube-like appearance, one can conclude that the Skitter Leaf mainly feeds on plant juices. The main "leaf" acts as a cape, which the Skitter Leaf uses to fend itself from predation by flipping in the air and whipping it around. Upon flipping, the creature will also reveal a rounded, yellow abdomen.

Locations[edit]

Pikmin 2[edit]

Areas[edit]

  • Perplexing Pool
    • There are six Skitter Leaves in this area. Three Skitter Leafs are located northwest of the landing site, between the Citadel of Spiders and the water body. Multiple Water Dumples can be found nearby as well. The fourth and fifth Skitter Leaves are located further north, near a black bramble gate. Both Skitter Leaves will be inside the water, with one on the southern side of the wall and the other on the other side. The sixth and final Skitter Leaf can be found directly south of the landing site, with it being on the island that contains the Onion Replica.

Caves[edit]

Challenge Mode[edit]

2-Player Battle[edit]

Pikmin 3[edit]

Areas[edit]

  • Tropical Wilds
    • There are two Skitter Leaves in this area. They can both be found southwest of the main segment, in the water just before the pathway leading to the Calcified Crushblat's segment.
  • Garden of Hope - Two spawn after the Data Glutton is collected
    • There are four Skitter Leaves in this area, with two spawning the day after the Data Glutton has been collected. The first two can be found directly east of the landing site, in the section behind the crystal wall. They are near the edge of the water body and near a Burgeoning Spiderwort (that also spawns after the Data Glutton is collected). The other two Skitter Leaves are located towards the southwest, in the small section below the ledge that contains the Sunseed Berry (the first fruit found in the game). These two Skitter Leaves spawn after the Data Glutton is detected. However, every Skitter Leaf (and the aforementioned Spiderwort) despawn when the Food Thief is collected.

Side Stories[edit]

Olimar's Comeback[edit]
  • Creature Hunting
    • There are four Skitter Leaves in this story's area. They can all be found in the area's main segment. A pair of Skitter Leaves are located at the bottom of the stationary paper bag west of the Story Mode's landing site, alongside some Dwarf Bulborbs. The third Skitter Leaf can be found east of the previous two, adjacent to the crystal wall. The fourth and final Skitter Leaf can be found slightly east of the third Skitter Leaf, in the now-drained water body.

Mission Mode[edit]

Collect Treasures![edit]
  • Tropical Forest
    • There are two Skitter Leaves in this stage. They are both located at the top of the vine that ends at the bottom of the SPERO. Slightly west of the Skitter Leaves is the alcove containing a Whiptongue Bulborb.
Battle Enemies![edit]
  • Shaded Garden
    • There are ten Skitter Leaves in this stage. Three Skitter Leaves can be found slightly east of the Blue Onion, in the section slightly south of the crystal wall. The remaining seven Skitter Leaves are all located in a small alcove towards the northeast, the alcove between the two smaller water bodies.
  • Beastly Caverns
    • There are four Skitter Leaves in this stage. They are all located in the eastern cavern, the one with the Master Onion. Two Skitter Leaves will be on the left side of the Onion, and the other two will be on the right side.

Bingo Battle[edit]

  • Shaded Terrace
    • There are two Skitter Leaves in layout A. The first Skitter Leaf is located slightly northeast of the cyan-colored Onion, at the top-left corner of the large plant pot. The second Skitter Leaf can be found slightly southwest of the pink-colored Onion, at the bottom-right corner of another large plant pot.
  • Stagnant Sea
    • There are three Skitter Leaves in layout A. The first Skitter leaf can be found in the small water body between the two Onion-populated island. It shares this space with multiple Wolpoles. The second Skitter Leaf is located on the central island, at the edge of the island—a direct line from the Dusk Pustules. The third and final Skitter Leaf is located in the body of water with the upright boot. It's the section with the Red Marble. The Skitter Leaf is adjacent to the 5-Pellet Posy.
  • Blooming Terrace
    • There are four Skitter Leaves in layout A. The first two Skitter Leaves are located in the northeasternmost corner, adjacent to a Bulborb. The other two Skitter Leaves can be found in the southwesternmost corner, adjacent to another Bulborb.
  • Buried Pond
    • There is one Skitter Leaf in layout A. Depending on the map layout, the Skitter Leaf will either in the northeastern section, or the southwestern section. It will be in the section containing the Red Marble and the Zest Bomb. The other section, containing a Blue Marble and a Face Wrinkler, will contains the Desiccated Skitter Leaf.

Pikmin 4[edit]

Areas[edit]

  • Blossoming Arcadia
    • There are five Skitter Leaves in this area. The first Skitter Leaf is located west of the Fragrant Ravine base, with it being near the pile of 12 raw materials underneath the clay bridge. The remaining four Skitter Leaves can be found between the Fragrant Ravine and the Misshapen Pond bases. Two of these Skitter Leaves will be near another clay bridge, and the other two will be in the water near the Flarlic.

Caves[edit]

  • Secluded Courtyard - 10 fall from the sky
    • There are twelve Skitter Leaves on sublevel 1. The first two can be found slightly northeast of the base, between the hanging Citrus Lump and the small water body containing a pair of Wolpoles. The final ten Skitter Leaves (all of which fall from the sky) can be found towards the far northeast, in the section holding the Universal Rubber Cutie. They all fall once the player gets close enough to the treasure.

Olimar's Shipwreck Tale[edit]

Notes

Olimar's notes

The skitter leaf is a relative of the pond skater that shed its wings and adapted to life on the ground. With no residual traits of its airborne past, the skitter leaf can neither fly nor skit across the surface of the water. The wings have since evolved into the leaflike structure on its back, which serves to hide the skitter leaf through mimicry. It appears quite effective, as few predators can see through this clever disguise.

Louie's notes

The superb amalgamation of juicy meat and leafy greens ensures that the skitter leaf will be the new spinach!

I'm in love with this camouflage job. It looks like an ordinary leaf fallen from a tree, and then wham! It starts to move and takes you by surprise. We could learn a lot from the way it uses protective coloration to blend in with its surroundings. I'm thinking of redesigning our space suits, or maybe even the S.S. Drake's hull.

Brittany's comments

Not only do its body and limbs look like leaves—its beady little eyes remind me of fruit. I don't see the point of all that camouflage when they startle at every single thing that gets close.

Charlie's comments

It's totally harmless, but sometimes there is a reason to defeat one. When that happens, the best we can do is to be merciful and land one solid strike on its back. Poor thing.

Dalmo's notes[edit]

In both its vibrant spring color and precise shape, this cunning crawler looks just like a leaf! It's the perfect camouflage! It only becomes an issue when this sometimes careless critter forgets to look for a hiding place with an abundance of other green leaves lying around. Then it becomes quite easy to spot!

Pikmin 2 Nintendo Player's guide[edit]

They look like leaves, but they're critters. You can swarm Skitter Leafs or hit them with air attacks and defeat them with ease. In one Challenge-mode arena, you'll defeat Skitter Leafs to earn point-producing treasure.

Pikmin 3 Prima Guide[edit]

The Skitter Leaf is a harmless creature that uses its leaf-shaped body to blend into the environment. When threatened, a Skitter Leaf jumps out of hiding and attempts to flee from its attackers. You can simply ignore these enemies, but they can prove useful when Pikmin cultivation is a priority. To defeat a Skitter Leaf, simply toss a single Pikmin onto its back.

Translation

A kind of pond skater that mimics the leaves of lush broadleaf trees. It pretends to be a leaf to avoid predation from enemies. Although it cannot float in water, it can swim well by twisting its body.

Feature #1: Mimicry

Pretending to be a leaf, it hides its body underneath to protect itself from enemies. It uses its stalk-like proboscis to suck nectar.

Feature #2: Remnants of wings

The part of the body that looks like a leaf was originally a pair of wings, the remnants of which make a bell-like sound when it moves.
(Image text: "There are blue spots on the body hidden by the wings")

Strategy[edit]

The following article or section contains guides.
The strategies shown are just suggestions.

With Pikmin[edit]

Due to their low health, any type of Pikmin can be used to defeat them. Simply swarm or charge at it your squad. Alternatively, landing one Pikmin directly onto its back will instantly defeat it. Later games in the series make this method easier due to the lock-on mechanic, though for Pikmin 4, the Skitter Leaf will need to be agitated.

Alternative methods[edit]

Their low health means that a leader can simply punch them until the Skitter Leaf is defeated, this is made even easier with the Rocket Fist upgrade. Oatchi also makes dealing with these enemies a breeze, even with a low levelled Chomp.

  • Common name: Skitter Leaf. The creature being called a leaf is a clear reference to its leaf shape allowing it to blend with the environment. Skitter likely comes from how it often flees from Pikmin and leaders when encountered.
  • Japanese nickname: ハンボ?. From ? (lit.: "leaf") and アメンボ? (lit.: "pond skater").
  • Japanese name: ミドリコノハムシ?, lit.: "Green Leaf Bug". From コノハムシ科?, the Skitterling family's Japanese name.
  • Scientific name: Rus pseudoarbicans. From pseudo, Greek for "fake", and possibly arbor, Latin for "tree". The meaning of Rus is unknown.
  • Internal names: Internally, its name in Pikmin 2 is sokkuri, which is an onomatopoeia for "looks like", once more referring to how it mimics a leaf. Its internal name in the next game is hambo, a romanization of its Japanese nickname.

Trivia[edit]

  • The Skitter Leaf resembles Magnolia acuminata leaves.
  • In both Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 3, the Skitter Leaf moves very slowly in water, and its animation resembles it attempting to swim.
  • In Pikmin 4, it's possible for both Oatchi and a Pikmin to carry the same Skitter Leaf body, as seen in the gallery above.
  • Occasionally, when a Skitter Leaf disguises itself right as it loses all of its health, it won't die until being disturbed again.[source needed]
